The six retired from the medical facility last week have a total of years of service to the hospital patients. Six Retire From Hospital Six employees of the American Fork Hospital were honored Fri., Feb. 26, at a retirement party held at the hospital. Margaret Malone, Maurine Burningham, Gwyn Larsen, Harry Malone, Jean Patterson and Dorothea Welcker were each presented with a gift in appreciation for the years of service they have given the people of the area over their tenure at the hospital. "All together these people have worked 96 years for the American Fork Hospital," said Mayor Malcolm H. Beck, American Fork, a member of the ' hospital board. "They have devoted much of their time and energies to help make the hospital what it 1 is today and will be missed by all who have served ; with them." Margaret Malone joined the hospital staff in June ! of 1966, and has served as hospital dietician and food : service manager. Born and raised in Salt Lake City, 1 she graduated from the University of Utah with a . degree in food nutrition. She completed a year in- ternship in Dietetics at Good Samaritan Hospital in ; Portland, Oregon. i Upon returning home, she went to work at the Holy Cross Hospital in Salt Lake City as a Clinical Dietician. After marrying Harry Malone, they resided in Boise, Idaho, and in Bountiful, Utah, before moving to American Fork. She has been dietician and directory of the Dietary Department at the ,' American Fork Hospital for the past 16 years. She has been active in many community projects and in her church, and is listed in "Who's Who in the West." , She plans to spend more time with her family, in I ,' pursuing her hobbies and in learning new things. She and Harry have two children, Chuck and Peggy, j . ; Harry Malone has served as the business office , manager at the hospital since October of 1976. A 1 I native of Salt Lake City, he graduated from ,! , Henager Business College, and later attended classes at the U of U and BYU. ; ! , ; After moving to American Fork, he worked at I I Chipman Mercantile Co. for 13 years before joining j the staff at American Fork Hospital. i ! : Active in his church, he is currently Stake i i Financial Clerk in the American Fork North Stake.' j He has been affiliated during the years with the : Jaycees, Kiwanis, Rotary Club and Lions Club, serving in many positions in the clubs, and as i president of the American Fork Chamber of Commerce. i ! He says after a "good vacation", he plans to find a ! new business challenge, possibly returning to school for "recycling." ! Maurine Burningham has been a Nurses Aide in the Obstetrics Ward at the hospital since March of 1961, currently serving on a part time basis. Born in Provo, she lived in Mammoth, Utah as a child, later in Provo. She and her husband, Clifford Burningham, are the parents of six children - three boys and three girls - and boasts of 19 grandchildren grand-children and eight great-grandchildren. She started working at the American Fork Hospital after her children were in school, and she has worked there for the past 20 years, most of the time as a nurses aid on the obstetrics floor. She says she enjoys knitting and reading, and plans now to spend a lot of her time with her family and to go camping with her husband. Dorothea Welcker, manager in the Dietary Department, retired after 21 years of service. She has been employed since March of 1961, and has served on several hospital committees over the years. Born in Lehi, she attended Henegar Business College, Utah Technical College and BYU. She worked at the Lehi Library for 17 years prior to joining the hospital staff. She has lived in Lehi, American Fork, and, now Orem. She loves flowers, enjoys raising them to give to friends and furnishes floral arrangements for her church and for special occasions at the hospital. She has four children -- Kenneth D. Welcker, Sylvia Jean Jarvis, Martin Welcker and Michelle Welcker - and 17 grandchildren. Gwyn Larsen has been at the window of the hospital lab since March 1969. When she began at the hospital, "we were called Out Patient" and the secretary did all paper work for x-ray, lab and the emergency room. They also did scheduling for Dr. Fogg, an orthopedic surgeon from Salt Lake who came one day a week. When the hospital was remodeled, a nurse worked in the emergency room from 4 p.m. to midnight, but the supervisor (of the nurse shift) was called for all -day time emergencies. Later the lab and x-ray was split. Mrs. Larsen plans to spend more time with her three daughters, and her son and in spoiling her 12 grandchidlren. She and her husband, Joseph W. Larsen, reside in Manila. Jean Patterson has served in many areas of the hospital since she began her employment in September Sep-tember of 1960. When she retired, she was department depart-ment manager over the Surgical floor. A registered nurse, she was born in Montpelier, Idaho but was raised in Utah. She graduated from Ogden High School and received her nurses training at Thomas D. Dee School of Nursing. - She worked there for a short time, then in Milford and at Utah Valley Hospital before coming to American Fork. She and her husband, Leo, have two sons and two daughters, and eight grandchildren. With retirement, she plans to enjoy her family, and friends, and to do some fishing and traveling. |
