Show Chris Rossow Wins Central's Spelling Bee By MARY COONS With the correct spelling of "assailant," Chris Rossow, a fifth grader, became the Central Elementary School spelling champion last Friday. After, many tense moments and approximately ap-proximately 400 words, Angie Olpin, a fourth grader, misspelled the word, "antibiotic." According to the spelling bee rules, Chris correctly spelled the misspelled word. That set the stage for his final spelling of the word, "assailant." Chris now advances to the Alpine School District Bee on Thursday, Thur-sday, March 25 at 7 p.m., at Barrett Elementary School. The district winner will advance to the state spelling bee sometime in early April. The state winner can then go to Washington D.C. in June for the national competition. Angie will be a designated alternate for Chris in the event that he is unable to make the district meet. After a month of study and practice, the fourth through sixth grades selected six participants for the school finals. The finalists from the fourth grades were Tara Colton, Tammy Mills, Angie Olpin, Spring Smith, Marci Street and Cory Taylor. Fifth grade winners were, Pamela Fenton, Alex Foulger, Lisa Mattinson, Kendrick Rose, Chris Rossow, Wendi Stanic. Sixth graders included Joe Pate, Bret Rodrigues, Jeana Starr, Angela Stephenson, Todd Taylor, and Case Thornton. Each of these competitors com-petitors were awarded certificates of merit from their teachers. The public is invited to come to the meet on March 25. |
