Junior High Boys Experience Cooking and Sewing Class Ninth graders have the option to take Home Ec. 1 at Pleasant Grove Junior High School. Since most all of the girls have had cooking and sewing by the time they are ninth graders, the class consists of young men. Taught by Beth Finch, the course has been available the past few years. She has a student teacher, Anna Marie Bench, assisting her this year. The boys have just completed the sewing unit of the class and are now beginning on nutrition and cooking. The boys first made an apron which was followed in turn with boxers and T shirts. Approximately 16 young men are now enrolled in the class. Miss Finch said that actually boys are better sewers than girls and follow the pattern and instructions easier. They also had a family relations unit in which Ihey learned about self-concepts. In the foods section they will learn basic nutrition, kitchen preparation, making breads, using milk products, vegetables, meat, candy, cake and will learn food preservation. They will also learn the types and uses of various kitchen equipment. The boys said they have enjoyed sewing and indicated that they will keep using what they have learned. |
