Cornell Haynie presented a special program for Veterans Day to all the students at Grovecrest Elementary school in Pleasant Grove. Principal Walter Reimschiissel told the students in three separate assemblies that he had a real feeling for this country because of his travel abroad. He told of his recent trip to China, and the primitive conditions in the country. He said that I he freedoms that we enjoy in 'his country, and the plentifulness that our country affords us is really something to be thankful for. Mayor Haynie explained to the children that patriotism means the love of one's country. lie said that it means not only the love of the country, but also of its traditions and customs. "We've had a lot of wars to protect our rights," said Haynie. "Other countries have tried to take them away." He said that we hear all the time of people desperately trying to get to the U.S., but that we don't hear about any that want to leave. He told the children that the four soldiers in the National Guard who had presented the flag could be called up al any time to protect our rights. Haynie encouraged the children to support this country. "When you pledge allegience to the flag, you have pledged allegience to this country," explained Haynie. Haynie told of a letter that he has recently received from his son in South America who's serving a mission for the LDS church. He said that his son told of the extreme poverty that the people there endure. He said (hat we should be very-grateful very-grateful that we were born where we were. "Be protective of your rights and avoid vandalism and the destruction of property," cautioned Haynie. |
