Show The Funny ESone By Mary Coons I I've observed something about Christmas this year that 1 haven't really caught on to before. It's coming before Thansgiving. The parade scheduled in Salt Lake this Saturday has brought some comments from residents up there that I snickered at this morning. The interviewer on the radio asked people what they thought of the Christmas para lie scheduled for downtown Salt Lake. They all were mad because they said that we should be allowed to celebrate Thanksgiving first, and then move into the Christmas season. One lady even said I hat if we don't watch out, we'll be celebrating Christmas after Easter. Interestingly enough, guess what these people were doing when the interviewer stopped them . . . Christmas shopping in one of the malls! Shame on us, not the retailers. We want to gel all of our "Christmas done" in October. We work all year long for December 25lh. Okay, I understand that many women that get it done early will really enjoy their Christmas season better if they get the work out of the way. But, are we teaching our children to buy instead of celebrate the meaning of the season? Don't ask me. I like to gel things along through the year, and store them until our celebration of the event in Bethlehem. i' But, I wonder if volved in the giving an;so so i, season, that we realize whe "g 01 'he we are spending an 7 time teaching our cErlUnl exemplary life that of tame lk world. nto I suppose that we all are Dhn one extent or the other Pia holiday is both fun andsa sf",ng'0r I would only interjec ng we need to teach one another .h he same thoughtful preoan'rU t kindness and peace that culture of ours theorelica I close to its bosom. hollH Giving thanks overa for family, friends and cg is a good way for us tos hrt ik anpe for a life that in one has touched anolh many of us. The meeting should interest local citizens, since District plans for giant aqueducts through northern cities could have a dramatic impact on I future water flexibility. All the cities - Lindon, Pleasant Z Grove, American Fork, Highland, Z Alpine, Cedar Hills and Lehi - have banded together to form the Tim-panog- Planning and Water Management Agency, an organization whose combined weight officials hope will influence the Water District to modify existing plans. Through its engineer, Lorin Powell, the Timpanogos Agency has officially proposed that CUP water be tran-sported through north Utah County in a concrete box culvert to be built in the existing Murdock Canal right of way. Current plans by the federal Bureau of Reclamation, CUP's engineering arm, call for two new pipelines that would slice a separate 120-fo- swath through the north end. But after hearing the box culvert alternative, Reclamation officials seem to be reconsidering. In fact, they say, the box culvert is very closf to the original plan they first proposed back in 1905. Even so, any final decision to go with the cities' alternative is in the hands of the Water Conservancy District, which is responsible for repayment of costs. The Timpanogos Agency is on the agenda for the 1:30 p.m. board meeting -- - to be held tomorrow, November 20, at District offices, 355 West 1300 South, Orem. Earlier committee meetings will also be held tomorrow to discuss topics including Senate appropriations and budget cuts, review of water right ap-plications and future involvement in state legislative activities. A complete agenda for the 1:30 board meeting is published in this paper under Pleasant Grove legal notices (please turn to page Times for committee meetings can be obtained through the District. j Care Center I Holds Pageant J By MARY COONS I A beauty pageant, complete with I talent and evening gown contests, I was held at the Lindon Care Center on ; Friday night, and it was definitely a ; lucky Friday the 13th for the ladies J that participated. The competition among the special contestants had progressed for the entire week, culminating in the pageant on Friday. The ladies wore ; both short and long dresses. - The talent competition ranged from a baton twirling exhibition to poetry recitation. The participants seemed pleased to be able to share their special talents with family and friends. But it was the audience that had ' tear-fille- d eyes when the entire group of 30 women from the center sang, "I a child of God." The women an enthusiastic ovation from .the audience each time they per- - formed. '4 The master of ceremonies, Joey Hailing, told about each woman as they came out. He told where they came from where they worked, and what they enjoyed. As the judges tallied their scores, Barbara Hilton, last year's queen, performed for the audience. They all clapped and told her how well she'd done. The moment came that all had waited for, and Carol Bale was an-nounced the new reigning queen. First runners-u- p were Cynthia Parson and Marlene Blackett. Second runner-u- p was Delia Twitchell and third was Sharon Shephard. In all, the evening could have been centered around the song that all of the participants sang, "I'd like to teach the world to sing." The ladies had a song lo sing, and those that came to watch were treated to a lovely night of entertainment of the best sort. H - - " " . . 1 - . I V ,( ; 4 i ' i i ! The city is in the process of the zoning book and will be approving !; it in the next few weeks. '. Lindon is planning to all the city ordinances which they an-- - ticipate will be a year-lon- g project. Mark Palesh, city recorder, said that with completion of this project the city should have one of the best ordinance books in the state. He said they will permit other communities to use it as a guide. Palesh explained that over the years the ordinance books get cluttered with revisions and amendments. Lindon City had last revised its ordinances in 1953. He reported that now there have been too many changes and the book is a real conglomeration which is difficult to read and even contradicts itself in parts.
