Show L ' NANCY NEWSPAPER Visitor is "Nancy Newspaper" at Lindon Lindon Elementary Studies Papers If you think this is someone wearing their Halloween costume a day early this year, you're wrong. This is "Nancy Newspaper" a special guest who visited Dixie Kotter's third grade class at Lindon Elementary on Monday, Oct. 30. Nancy's visit initiated a newspaper unit for the students. She walked into the room sobbing and complaining. com-plaining. "Do you know what I have to go through?" she sniffed. "I have to squeeze through rollers and have these little words printed all' over me. Then I have to be rolled up tightly with a rubber band around my waist. I'm packed up, carried away, and thrown against a front door. That smarts! I don't mind all this when people read me, but sometimes I sit out in the cold for days and I 've gone through all that pain for nothing." Nancy and Karen then discussed with the children the importance of reading a newspaper. Needless to say, the students were excited to begin studying the newspaper when Nancy Newspaper left. They have been sharing in class the articles they've read at home and some students are surprised that they can comprehend a lot of the articles. The students are studying the types of news found in the paper and keeping a notebook of the different types of articles they find. They will shortly begin writing a class newspaper and then broadcast their news on local "TV". The other third grade class that Miss Van Wagenen teaches is studying communications com-munications in the areas of the telephone and the post office. Nancy Newspaper (alias Nancy Weist) student teaches in Miss Van Wagenen's class and Karen Bischoff student teaches in Dixie Kotter's class. |
