Show Roundabout Has Awards Banquet by Mary West Saturday night there was an awards banquet honoring the participants par-ticipants of Round About raceway. This was a banquet typical of any sport at the end of the season. There were trophies and good thoughts and food and gag prizes. I came home with such a warm feeling and I cannot pass up the opportunity oppor-tunity to give some views of the sport. Racing is all about people. The people who help put on the race, the people who compete, but most of all the spectators. Spectators who cheer for the hero of their choice. The Moms and Dads, the friends, the enthusiast who just enjoys wat- ching cars go fast. It has been my priveledge to work on the timing stand and take pictures through out the season and from my position I have been able to see the sport from a special angle. Theres nothing quite like the particular joy and smile of the competitor com-petitor receiving a trophy, theres a special look on the faces of each individual group as they cheer their hero to victory. There is a look of concern and intensity in-tensity on the face of the racer who has wrecked his car and is trying to get it repaired before his next event. Our sport as with any sport has also had its days of argument and contention but they pass and the sport continues. con-tinues. Any sport is based on competition and trying to do better. It is based on participating par-ticipating and finishing what you start no matter mat-ter what position you are in. If one chooses to sit out the game, the game continues. The spirit of the game is not to give up but to keep working for a better finish. Through many of the past seasons I have seen fellows who never won a race, but they worked their way up to better positions. If in the competitors mind he is doing his best and his fans see that he is really trying then the spirit of the race has won. Recently there was a report on television of a high school team that had never won a game, but their cheerleaders yelled all the more and when they made a good play the crowd went wild. Racing at Roundabout Roun-dabout is all about peopel, the Hansens who cheer their sons, the Sweats, the Mitani's, and Carolyn's group. Its about the crews who sweat and toil to keep a car running run-ning and drivers who go out and wreck them. Racing is about the officials of-ficials who get their kicks from seeing that the race goes on and knowing that they have made it happen. I believe that everyone wins at Roundabout no matter where they finish, if they are just there. |
