Show THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 9, 1978 PLEASANT GROVE REVIEW. PLEASANT GROVE, UTAH THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 9, 1978 Teenagers Don't Always Make It When They Try to Work, Go to School by Dr. Daryl .J. McCarty Can a teenager lake a job, attend school, and bo successful ;it hot h? 1 depends. have observed several results of junior hiirh and high school students going to work. Jim, a conscientious student is also a con-scientious employee. Hut both are too much for him. Something has to give. If Jim's in the "spending mood", he may make more effort to keep the boss happy than his teachers. That is putting priorities backwards. Sometimes a job opens two new worlds to a student. First, there's the work. Then there's the activity the student enters because he now has money, movies, con certs, dating. All that activity can cut deeply into studies. Then there's the young lady who took a job largely to get away from the frustrations she's experiencing at school. She may find even more frustrations on the job, which won't help her efforts at school. Many high schools have work release programs. These programs give on the job experiences to studetns who aren't sure about what they want in the way of em-ployment, so they fin-- d out. while still in school, whether they want to be mechanics, stenographers, hospital employees, etc. Sometimes a student will be passing, but not really accomplishing much more in school. Then that student, let's call him Frank, gets a job. Working gives him confidence, ap-preciation for education and a desire to do well in school. In that case, working enhanced Frank's school work. Terrific! So there can be both positive and negative aspects about students going to work. Parents should give their children guidance when they bcome If the prospective job would keep the student up past 10 p.m. chances are this would hurt the kids school work. You might want to get an understanding beforehand. "Look Blaine," you might say, "School comes first, if your studies go downhill, that job comes to a halt." The working student often sees paycheck "wealth" as a way to acquire expensive items that create significant debt - an item such as a car. If a student has monthly payments, this makes it toughter to do the job. If you let your child's school effort drop in favor of a job, you may be permitting your child to settle for a frac-tion of that young per-son's potential. Don't do it. "TAKE DOWN" Daryll Peterson as "Bobich" encourages Stephen Furst, a reluctant wrestler in the new movie "Take Down." Peterson is Pleasant Grove resident. Furst played "Flounder" in "Animal House" Movie Filmed in Utah Will Premier on Nov. 14 Pleasant Grove's own Daryll Peterson, son of Eric and Ellen Peter-son, will appear in a featured role in the major motion picture "Take Down," to be premiered Tuesday, Nov. 14 at the Fox Cot-tonwood Theatre in Salt Lake City. Peterson plays the role of "Bobich" in the . Keith Merrill-directe- d motion picture, which was filmed in American Fork, Orem and Salt Lake City last winter under the title of "Wedge" Stars appearing in the movie include Ed-ward Hermann, Kathleen Lloyd, Loren-zo Lamas and Maureen McCormick. It was Daryll's per-formance as a wrestler at Pleasant Grove High that pegged him for the movie role. He took second place in Region 6 wrestling and second in the State Champion-ships. "Take Down'' will be premiered in Salt Lake City on Nov. 14 with the premier being held for the benefit of the Pine Canyon Boys Ranch. Regular showings will begin Nov. 15 in theatres throughout the Moun-tain West.
