Show Cross Country Runners Have Special Dedication by Jack Hill It takes a special kind of dedication to be a cross-country runner, something that few 14-17 year olds have. Those who have it can be seen each evening either on the track or on the streets conquering a torturous workout prepared by P.G. Coach Jim Flanagan. P.G.'s ''harriers," as crosscountry cross-country runners are referred to, have been working as a team since late August in anticipation an-ticipation of Wednesday's Region Reg-ion VI meet. Conrad Spencer, junior at Pleasant Grove, and Randy Shepherd, senior transfer student stu-dent from California have surfaced sur-faced as 'the Vikings one-two punch. Which one is one and which one is two depends on the day, as both have finished first in meets held to date. Saturday, Oct. 12, P.G. hosted host-ed Spanish Fork, American Fork and Lehi in a quad-meet Even though Spencer and Shepherd Shep-herd finished one-two, the Viking Vik-ing team ended up second. Scoring in cross-country run-ing run-ing is 1 point for first, 2 points second, etc. with the team whose first five finishers having hav-ing the lowest total being declared de-clared winner. Something like golf. Saturday's total were S.F. 30, P.G. 37, A.F. 66 and Lehi 75. Spencer was first with a time of 13:20. Shepherd was just one second behind while 3rd place finisher Gary Marshall Mar-shall of Spanish Fork was timed tim-ed in 13:57. Other Viking finishers in the top ten were Gary Macfarlane 7th and Garrett Bennett 10th. Whether it's by the Seminary Semin-ary apple tree or coming up the hill west of the football field, the Viking "harriers" are working hard in a sport that requires a great deal of just that, hard work." |
