Batik is the Malayasian word for wax writing which describes an art form of Indonesia originally intended for the creation of printed fabric. Holly Meeker Rom, however, has gone far beyond that limited far-eastern utilitarian application and has developed a personal perso-nal style of batik which is, in the strictest sense of the word, a highly developed art-form. Her batiks are finely conceived works, replete re-plete with all the elements that make oil paintings or watercolors truly fine art. Holly Meeker Rom is first a fine artist, but, at the same time, a superior executor of the intricacies of batik as a fine art. She comes by this reputation reputa-tion rightfully, by virtue of both native talent and training. She holds an M.A. from California State University Univer-sity in Sacramento, and pursued additional study at the Rhode Island School of Design, the Parson School of Design, New York City; and the University of Utah. In addition to her batiks, Old Town Gallery is pleased to exhibit some of her watercolors waterco-lors which show the same superior artistic ability and talent as her unique batiks. Since the discovery of oil as an artistic medium by the Van Eyck brothers of Flanders Flan-ders at the beginning of the fifteenth century, the number num-ber of oil painters is legion. Yet, most are forgotten, if by chance they were recognized at all even during their lives. Occasionally, one or two very young artists rise above the surface and are recognized by critics and others as being unique. One such artist is Kath ryn Goodman Reynolds. Kathryn Reynolds comes with impeccable credentials. She holds a degree from Scripps College in California and has studied extensively in Europe and New York, working with such outstanding outstand-ing artists as Charles Pfahl, Burt Silverman, Harvey Din-nerstein, Din-nerstein, Robert Beverly Hale, John Howard Sanden and David Leffel. She is a native of Salt Lake City, now resident in Dade City, Florida. The works on exhibition all show a high degree of respect for the discipline required for the creation of superior works of art. She is, among other things, a highly skilled practitioner of her art, combining her great talent with the knowledge of what makes good, enduring oil paintings, the likes of which are rarely seen these days. Adobe is not necessarily native only to the United States, although the Indians of the southwest used the Please turn to page i 5B More Women Artists Continued from Page 1 B clay technique from very early times and most people generally associate it with them. It probably originated ;n ancient Egypt and the word was brought here by the Spanish. Holly A. Haas, has taken an artifact and turned it into an art form of the highest stature. She developed adobe as an art form after touring Egypt and Greece and being struck with the fact that those ancients use1 materials indigenous to the area to recreate scenes from everyday life. Holly Haas creates these same themes by carving the adobe she finds in New Mexico and other parts of the southwest and old Mexico where she explores for appropriate sand and clay. To these fcsic materials she adds ground pigments which form a strong bond with the clay. Each piece is then slowly cured and preserved with a seal. Her work ranges from small wall pieces to large wall panoramas commissioned commission-ed by banks and churches. Truly, Holly Haas has created a unique and lasting art form. Holly A. Haas has an M.A. from San Francisco State University and did additional study at Marquette University, Univer-sity, Milwaukee; and the Lester Polakov Studio of Stage Design in New York City. She has exhibited widely in the Southwest, including Taos and Albu- querque. This will be her initial gallery exhibition in Utah. |
