Show County Proposes New Dump Site Summit County Commissioners Commis-sioners met March 15 with city officials from Park City, Kamas and Oakley to discuss joint participation in a new 80 acre landfill proposed for Brown's Canyon. Currently, garbage service for Oakley and unincorporated unincorporat-ed areas around Kamas is provided by a special service district under the auspicious-es auspicious-es of Summit County. The distri:t has the power to assess a mill levy and is governed by a special board of trustees. Garbage collected by the district is taken to a landfill near Henefer, which is over 40 miles away from Kamas. According to Summit County Commissioner Cliff Blonquist, the proximity of the Henefer landfill makes it an inefficient depository for refuse collected from the -Kamas, Oakley and Park City areas. Blonquist said the county would like to see the Park City area and incorporated Kamas join the special service district and together develop a new landfill in Brown s Canyon which is between the two areas. The Commissioner stressed the new dump would be hidden a mile off the main road to minimize its visual impact in the area. Park City was represented by Public Work Director Jim Holcomb. The joint proposal may be attractive to Park City because its present landfill site is rapidly filling up, which will necessitate a search for a new location in the future. Also, increasing costs of operating the dump have placed the municipal landfill fund deeply in the red. Residential garbage collection col-lection in Park City is currently contracted by private pri-vate collection company. |
