Show Letters . Keep Schiller Dear Editor: Dear School Board Mem bers: It is unfortunate that I should have to write you this letter, but I am afraid you have made a tremendous mistake. The non-renewal of Dr. Brian Schiller's contract is a disgrace to the Park City School District and to you personally. My heart was filled with shock and sadness upon hearing this announcement. announce-ment. Dr. Schiller is the backbone of your district. In the short time he has been here, he has accomplished more than anyone in the school district. I was looking forward to many more years of his fine performance. May I ask what prompted you to make this decision? How could any one of you possibly evaluate Dr. Schiller? Schil-ler? How many times have you been to school to observe a classroom, assembly, par-, par-, ent., conference, or how a discipline problem is handled? hand-led? Did you attend the eighth grade graduation, the Christmas program, or how many of you have volunteered volunteer-ed to chaperone a field trip? Dr. Schiller will be a great loss to the students and teachers of the Middle School. There is no replacement replace-ment for him, as you cannot improve upon the quality of education he has brought us. My only condolence is that my children were able for two short years to see what education can and should be. I pity you that you cannot see what a fine man you are about to lose. I am still a firm believer in "the good guy wins in the end", it is just a shame he gets trampled a few times in the process. Suzanne Sevier Wants Schiller Dear Editor: Dear Board Members: Dr. Brian Schiller is the best administrator the Park City School District has hired in the 5 V2 years I have lived here. He is innovative and intelligent. He is extremely knowledgeable about the needs of the middle school child. He puts the welfare of the students first. He is not afraid to stand up for what he believes. Dr. Schiller came to the district and pulled together a staff which was divided over the resignation of the previous pre-vious principal. That staff was united with him before the first day of school for one common goal - the total education of the children. His enthusiasm to prepare our children for life, his concern for each and every child, and his respect for every child, parent and staff member are all reasons why the middle school has become be-come an excellent one instead of mediocre. Dr. Schiller is in education because he cares about our children. He is dedicated to helping each and every child in the middle school reach his or her potential. He takes the time to go into the class room, to talk to the children in the halls, to discuss their concerns and problems and help them work it out. I was shocked to hear the board had tentatively decided decid-ed not to offer Dr. Schiller a contract. I do not know the reasons behind this decision. If there is a problem, wouldn't probation and a chance to correct it be a better solution? There can not be any continuity in the school if the principal is replaced every two years. It is not good for the students, the staff, or the reputation of the school district to have a new principal every two years. I feel it is important for the welfare of the Park City children for you to reconsider and offer a contract to Dr. Schiller. Please look at the many positive things Dr. Schiller lias done for our children and our school system. Mary E. Austin Defends Schiller Dear Editor: - Once again the Superintendent Superin-tendent of Schools and his School Board have broken faith with the parents, students and teachers of the Park City School District. Because of the recent actions of the Board in reference to Dr. Schiller we feel that the entire Board and the Superintendent Super-intendent should resign their positions. Three of our five board members do not have any children who attend Treasure Mountain Middle School. Two of the five have no children in any of the Park City schools. We need Board members who have knowledge know-ledge of and participate in our. schools on a daily basis.- - The Superintendent has provided pro-vided us with a constant source of dissension, outrage and litigation. We need a Superintendent and a Board that are responsive to the educational needs of our community. The children of Park City deserve this. Kenneth 0. Mears Kathy Lander Mears Retain Schiller Dear Editor: Dear Board Members: I would like to respond to some of the specific criticism levied against Dr. Brian Schiller by Superintendent Goodworth. I have witnessed the relationship Dr. Goodworth referred to in his K.S.L. T.V. interview between Dr. Schiller Schil-ler and a board member. I have even participated in this relationship myself on two occasions, by playing , golf with the two aforementioned aforemen-tioned individuals. I assure you the only impropriety I witnessed was the caliber of golf played that day. Has this relationship effected the quality of Dr. Schiller's job performance? Is the Superin- i tendent now in a position to dictate Dr. Schiller's social activities for him? Is this relationship grounds for- dismissal? dis-missal? I think not. Superintendent Good-worth Good-worth has criticized Dr. Schiller for taking an extended extend-ed vacation this past summer while our new middle school was being built. Dr. Schiller was involved in a foreign exchange program in London, Lon-don, England observing how other school systems operate. oper-ate. Upon his return from England he choose to spend a few days canoeing in the backwaters of Minnesota. After all this vacationing Dr. , Schiller had the audacity to show up for work two days prior to the date he was instructed to. Are these dismissable offences? I think not. As Dr. Schiller readily admits he did not turn all of his staff evaluations in on the date the district policy instructs. He was approximately approxi-mately 8 days late. Based on my observations Dr. Schiller was spending an inordinate amount of time coordinating Please turn to page 1 4 more letters must constantly remind ourselves our-selves that, as was said many years ago: "Eternal Vigilance Vigi-lance is the price of Liberty." If we are serious about improving the quality of life in Park City, which should be every citizen's primary civic responsibility, then we must be willing to follow every action of our elected representatives repre-sentatives and hole them accountable. Dr. Schiller is not the issue, he is merely the vehicle. What is at question is the competence of the Board of Education, and the larger issue of how the educational program of this community shall be administered. admini-stered. There have been enough incidents to indicate that Dr. Goodworth, not Dr.' Schiller, is the one whose tenure should be terminated. The taxpayers and citizens should not rest until that takes place and then they should get on with the more important task of being concerned with the competency compe-tency and ability of the Board of Education, itself. Charles G. Latterner Respects Schiller Dear Editor: The following is a letter which was submitted to the Park City School Board in January bv the Treasure Continued from Page 2A the completion of a multi-million multi-million dollar school. As anyone knows who has ever been involved in the opening of a building approaching this magnitude there are a myriad of problems that occur which need immediate attention. It appears based on Dr. Goodworth 's evaluation evalua-tion that Dr. Schiller would have fulfilled his job description descrip-tion more properly by abandoning aban-doning the new school and spent his time making sure the evaluations were in on time. Is this a dismissable offence? I think not. Furthermore, Superintendent Superinten-dent Goodworth refers to the fact that Dr. Schiller "was hired to pull an unruly and divided staff together; and to this date has chosen to join them". I ask you does an unruly, staff take it upon themselves to commit the additional time and energy necessary to successfully complete and outdoor education educa-tion program of the complexity complex-ity of the Arches trip. Does a divided staff throw 100 of their support behind a principal when he is dismissed dismiss-ed because they deeply care and appreciate what he has done for them and the community? I think not. Finally, is the current disruptive atmosphere promulgated pro-mulgated by the superintendent superinten-dent the type of environment we want our children growing grow-ing up in? I think not! Kim D. McClelland Supports Schiller Dear Editor: One of Dr. Goodworth's reasons for refusing to renew Dr. Schiller's contract is strongly reminiscent of Mr. Wendell Ashton's unfortunate unfortun-ate attempt at forcing his distorted sense of morality on an unsuspecting public when he refused to renew the contract of Varuian Kojian, director of the Utah Symphony. Could the real, but unspoken, unspo-ken, motivation behind this and many of Dr. Good-worth's Good-worth's covert and overt personnel actions over the years, be an attempt to subtly enforce views that if introduced openly would be shouted down as threats to our rights as free people and to our cherished heritage of choosing our standards of conduct without regard to the dictates of parochial dogma? It is only a short step from action like his to book banning, such as recently took place in Alpine, and other more blatant forms of censorship or control, such as government censorship of what we may or may not view on television. Dr. Schiller's choice of companionship is none of Dr. Goodworth's business official or otherwise. other-wise. Excellence in education educa-tion should be Dr. Good-worth's Good-worth's overriding concern, not busy-bodying or conniving. conniv-ing. The pupils and the public deserve better from the Superintendent and especially es-pecially from a Board of Education which apparently is unwilling or unable to form independent judgments. I presume Dr. Goodworth is counting on the usual "tempest in a teapot" syndrome so prevalent in public affairs in Park City to enable him to ride out this storm as he has so many in the past. It is time the taxpayers and electorate in Park City grow up and take responsibility for their own words and actions. A protest, such as this current one, is of no avail if it merely whimpers off into bewildered silence. People like Dr. Goodworth and some of our City officials are merely strengthened to go a little . farther the next time if they find they have created a storm they can ride out. We Mountain Middle School PTO expressing our appreciation appre-ciation of Dr. Schiller and his staff and program at the school. In view of present circumstances, circum-stances, we felt is appropriate appro-priate to share this letter with the public and to again affirm our support of Dr. Schiller and to express our utmost confidence in his abilities as an educator and v administrator. The Treasure Mountain Middle School Parent-Teacher Organization Marie, Nelson, President Kathy Mears, Vice-President Linda Barnes, Secretary Diane Harding, Treasurer Dear Gary and School Board Members: Often when a negative situation is present, individuals indivi-duals and groups do not hesitate to voice loud complaints. com-plaints. However, we feel that when something is positive, affirmation should be given to that as well. We of the Treasure Mountain Moun-tain Middle School PTO are pleased to be able to write to the members of the school board our positive regard and support of Dr. Schiller. The creative programming, innovative teaching, the staff's respect for each other and their students all give testimony to an effective administrator. Treasure Mountain Middle School offers an educational experience experi-ence whose quality compares favorably to schools in much larger and better financed school districts. We are impressed with the commitment commit-ment of the teachers towards providing the best possible program for the students. As an individual Dr. Schiller expresses an openness open-ness to persons that is not always found in school administrators. While discussion dis-cussion may not always result in agreement, there is always a willingness for dialogue. In a recent survey conducted by the PTO, an opportunity was given for persons to list both positive and negative aspects of the school. Frequently, no negative nega-tive remarks were made at all, and when present, dealt with such minor items as the need for a map of the building in the lobby of the school. In the space provided for positive remarks, 90 of the respondents listed Dr. Schiller and his concern for children and quality education. educa-tion. Both these written remarks and the verbal feedback we receive from parents and students indicate indi-cate a high level of support for the program at TMMS in general and for Dr. Schiller in particular. Again, it is our pleasure to communicate with the school board in such a positive manner. . Suzanne Shellenberger EMT Coordinator Behind Schiller Dear Editor: As a former teacher at the middle school, in Park City, I would like to say a few words about the recent action taken against Brian Schiller by Superintendent Richard Good worth. I was one of the casualities in the first great middle school fiasco a few years back. Although I was not terminated, I felt compelled com-pelled to resign due to the actions of Goodworth and the then Board of Education. All those concerned fought hard the next year to elect new board members and many new faces appeared on the Board. Otis Falls was removed remov-ed as principal of the middle school and Brian was hired. From all indications the teachers at the middle school feel they have one of the best principals this district has ever seen. The students also feel the same way. So what's the problem? I say the problem is the man who would be king, Richard Goodworth. He, has, in my opinion, been the PCHS Thanks Dear Editor: The student body of Park City High School would like to extend its thanks to the Park Citv Ski Resort, Park West and Deer Valley for the hospitality which they afforded us this year. Each of the resorts provided us a day of skiing free of charge. We should also like to thank Deer Valley, Wolfe's and Red Pine Sports for making equipment available to those of our students who needed it in order to ski. All of these businesses went to great lengths to provide us three afternoons of fun and recreation.
