Show 'Appalachian Spring' to meet Rocky Mountain summer Dancers from Sundance Summer Theatre in Provo Canyon will perform to Aaron Copland's "Appalachian Spring" Friday and Saturday, Aug. 30 and 31, at 5:30 p.m. The performances, called "A Dance for Dee," are a tribute to late Utah choreogrpaher Dee Winterton. Donations will be accepted for the Brigham Young University (BYU) Dee R. Winterton Scholarship Fund and the University of Utah Dee R. Winterton Award. Winterton was a nationally recognized recog-nized dance specialist who died Oct. 15, 1984, in an automobile accident near Wallsburg, Wasatch County. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees from the University Univer-sity of Utah. He was affiliated with the Repertory Dance Theatre at the U and with Salt Lake's Ririe-Wood-bury Dance Company. He had taught at BYU until 1968; He organized the Dancers' Company and co-directed the Young Ambassadors of BYU. "Dee left a remarkable dance legacy," said Jayne Luke, artistic director of the Sundance theater and choreographer of the tribute. "His dance influence is felt throughout the nation. Both the assistant choreographer Craig B. , Call and I were trained by Dee. Our dancing reflects Dee's style of motion and the philosophy that we should look for the unusual instead of the expected with our dancing. "Dee's life was a gift to anyone who loved dance. With modest joy, he used his dancers to show his love of motion." The Sundance stage was selected because "Dee loved the mountains surrounding Sundance and he worked in them as either choreo grapher or artistic director from 1970 through 1980," said Luke. Copland's music also works well on the outside stage. "Aaron Copland is an American composer whose 'Appalachian Spring' reflects the outdoors and the vitality and tenacity of people who live in the mountains," said Luke. A $5 donation is suggested for those attending the tribute dance, although larger and smaller sums will be welcome. Audience members may designate to which scholarship fund they would like to contribute. Dancers will include Jason Ayon, Craig B. Call, Susan Clouse, Steve Gray, Colleen Hawks, Keith Johnson, John-son, Jayne Luke, Betsy Nagel and Fred Schneider. All are present or former members of the Sundance troupe who were influenced by Winterton. |
