Show Open fires require permit says chief Fire Chief Jim Berry said the Park City Fire Department was called on to fight two open fires this week. As a result, he said he would like to remind residents and business owners that permits are required "for any open flame other a barbeque." An unattended field fire started by a farmer clearing out his irrigation ditch spread over an acre of ground and sent thick clouds of smoke across 1-80 near Old Ranch Road, Berry said. "I've seen accidents caused by brush fires like that one," he said. The second fire occurred near the Mid Mountain Lodge, where the Park City Ski Area had demolished an old building. The ski area had a permit to burn the remains of the building, Berry said, "but we received too many calls on it. We determined there was too much wind and asked them to extinguish it." Commercial burn permits are $25, but residential permits are free, Berry said. Although farmers and ranchers are not required to have burn permits, Berry said he hoped they would call the fire department in advance "as a courtesy." Bum permits may be obtained by calling the Park City Fire Department Depart-ment (649-6709 or 649-6942) at least 24 hours in advance. A representative representa-tive from the fire department will inspect the proposed burn site, which must be at least 30 feet from the nearest building, Berry said. -Open fires must be attended and extinguished before dark, he added. Berry said the department has the power to cite anyone not complying with the open fire regulation which applies to all residents in the Park City Fire Service District. The fire district boundaries are approximately approximate-ly the same as the school district's, Berry said. |
