Show I was interested to hear about the cross-country skiers who were disoriented and spent the night in the frigid air in the mountains above Ogden. They had apparently lost their way, and couldn't find their way back to the main path. Lucky for them that only two were treated for frostbite, and two were treated for cold. Could of ended tragically, with death. In the afterthought of the situation, I think there should be a few pointers brought out about cross-country skiing. This is to say that they are just reminders for the experienced skier.and helpful hints for the beginner. It is always important to remember that there are others who know the area, and are willing to share their information and experience with you. Before entering any area, which you are unfamiliar with, gain as much information as you possibly can. Ask other skiers who have been in the area. Check with local residents, forest service officials, and skiers hotline. Remember, the more information you can obtain about the area, the more enjoyable you skiing will be. ; I Another good pointer, is to obtain a map of the area, so : jhat if you should become lost, you could possibly find a ; reference point. Always expect the unexpected. Plan ahead. If you plan a louring tripinto the hills, be prepared. Find out the current weather conditions, and what the forecast will bring. ; Try to let someone else know where you will be going, what time you will leave, and what time they should expect you return. IU Most of all, remember to use your, head, don't push yourself beyond reason, and be cautious. For safe skiing, be smart. |
