Show Large, Skilled Field Expected For USSA Regionals in January A top field of over 175 racers is expected for the USSA Western Regional Series scheduled for January 10-13 at Nordic Valley and Snowbasin and January 14 and 15 at Snowbird and Park City Resort. According to Tim LaMar-che, LaMar-che, USSA Western Regional Director, the best racers from USSA's five divisions, Intermountain, Far West, Pacific Northwest, and Alaska, Alas-ka, will compete against the top collegiate racers and the National Junior Team. "This is the best field we have ever assembled for a Western Regional race." said LaMarche. "The presence pre-sence of the Women's National Junior Team will certainly add to the competition competi-tion in the women's events." Five members of the Women's National Junior Team are expected to compete. com-pete. Included are twenty year old Heidi Bowes of Steamboat Springs, Colorado, Colora-do, ranked 26th in downhill, 7th in giant slalom, and 6th in slalom in the United States and Lisa Wilcox of Ithaca, New York, ranked 18th in giant slalom, and 16th in slalom. Also attending will be Beth Madsen of Aspen, Colorado ranked 13th in downhill and 10th in giant slalom; Linda McGehee of Boulder, Colorado ranked 24th in downhill, 11th in giant slalom, and 7th in slalom; and Eva Psosi of Franconia, New Hampshire, ranked 11th in downhill, 16th in giant slalom and 12th in slalom, who were recently selected for the National Junior Team based on their results in the Aspen Training Camp and the Vail and Winter Park Elbert races. On the 10th and 11th Nordic Valley will hold a mens giant slalom and Snowbasin a women's slalom, sla-lom, and on the 12th and 13th, Nordic Valley will hold a women's giant slalom and Snowbasin a men's slalom. January 14th and 15th, Park City will hold men's and women's giant slalom events respectively, and Snowbird will hold women's and men's slalom events respectively. Other names to watch for at the Regionals are Kathy Kriener from the University of Utah, a former Canadian National Team member and Olympic gold medal winner; Silva Bonfini from Italy, representing Montana State University, 5th in the Europa Cup slalom standings in 1982; Jeff Sarchette from Sun Valley; John Walsh from Squaw Valley; Sean Willette from Echo Summit; David Mahalko from Montana State University; Mark Halvorsen from the University of Utah; Sanny Greenwalt and Albert Innamorati also from the University of Utah. Another possible entry for the women is twenty-five year old U.S. Ski Team "B" Team member Abbi Fisher of South Conway, New Hampshire. Fisher is ranked 5th in slalom and giant slalom in the United States and has been on the National Team for nine years. The Western Regional Series is an important stepping stone to major competitions such as the North American Trophy Series and the National Championships," added La Marche. |
