Show State Tournament Next For PCHS With the regional title tucked under its belt the PCHS tennis team has its sights set on the state championships held at the Racquet Club on May 15. Miner coach Dave 'Don't call me coach' Chaplin said he thought Kanab, the 1978-79 state champions, and Montecello would provide the main competition from Region 12. He said the teams from Region 10 were usually w eak in tennis. Chaplin said he expects the winners from regions 1 1 and 12 to be seeded first and second and the top team from region 10 to be seeded third in the state wnament. Following this logic the second team from Region 12 and Dugway would be the fourth and fifth seeds, and to Chaplin, the further down the line he has to tangle with Dugway again the happier he will be. "I hope we are seeded second because it will be an. advantage. They should work it out so we avoid playing our region until as late as possible," Chaplin said. Under the system projected by Chaplin the first,- fourth, fifth and eighth seeds would meet in one bracket while the second, third, sixth and seventh seeded teams meet in the other bracket. This would pit the winner between the fourth and fifth seed against the number one seed while the number two seed will face the winner of the third and sixth seed matches. If Kanab was projected as winning all its matches against the number eight seed it would have to face Dugway or the number two team in its region. Park City would face the top team from Region 10. In essence the Miners would have the easier draw. "To be candid about it Dugway came in second last year behind St. Joe's but they had the better draw. Our draw was much tougher," Chaplin siad. "With the luck of the draw a mediocre team can beat a good team." Chaplin said if at least fourplayers from a team reach the finals, and three of them win, the state championship would probably be theirs. He said he expected both of his doubles teams to make the finals and felt all three singles players had good chances to make the finals. "I feel good about Darrick's (Olsen) chances. I think he will play at the level of his best ability. He will not beat himself," Chaplin siad. "Shawn (Glieden) has excellent tennis matches in him and the odds are he could pull those goodmatches out and play them. "Paul (Dyer) will play as hard as he can," Chaplin finished. |
