Show ( jy XT- S$ "Km. - C'N The Wonderful Wizard... Admit ii. who among you hasn't wished for magical powers to solve seemingly unsolvable problems? Ah, to be a wizard, if only for a moment... The Wizard of Oz was one of the two prc-cast roles last Monday when more than 100 children from first to eighth grade auditioned for parts in teh musical, "The Wizard of Oz". And who can blame director Mike Smith for choosing to play the role himself? There were lions and tigers and bears, (oh my) auditioning all over the auditorium at the Middle School. Smith said afterwards that this was honestly one of the hardest shows he has cast. Park City appears to a large number of talented youngsters. Fifty children were chosen to perform this Saturday in the show. It is now small surprise that city manager Arlcne Loble is mother to a munchkin. Daughter Rachel is reportedly thrilled with the part but has stressed to ' mom, "It is a lot of hard work", a phrase familiar to ' the Loble household. The .' Finagcns scored big with thi , show, sone Jimmy, will' appear as head Winkie ar:d daughter Pam as the witch we love to hate, the wickt d witch of the north. The othi r characters in the sho v ' are. ..wait, I have a betttr idea, why not find a piece o" time Saturday to come out and see the performance. There will be two shows, an afternoon matinee and an early evening performance. Bring a child and watch the smiies appear. There were smiles all around on Sunday when those magical folks at the Carbide Lamp presented another brunch to remember. Mothers were treated to flowers and lavish attention and the entire family was treated to a marvelous meal. The wizard (or it wizardess or wizard person) award for wonderous feats in the a single kitchen goes again to Sue Haygood. The League of Women Voters has plans to perform a bit of magic themselves. The group will sponser, an information panel, along with KPCW. the night before the upcoming bond election to try to explain the pros and cons of the issues. I have heard all the very sound reasons but honestly I am concerned about an election . which suddenly appears to have grown by leaps and bonds. Maybe I'm naive, but the library project seems to be hard for me to find fault with. We not only get a modern library long past due in Park City, but we also get a restored historic treasure in the form of the old Miners Hospital .: And if not a full blown museum, at least some space to hosue and : display a number of old Park City mementoes. It is an issue young and old, athletic i and non-athletic can agree on. Now, there is where the simple issues end. From here we leap to a park, a field house and an ice arena and convention facility. I'm for two out of three, but that's not the point. Maybe we are asking for too much, too soon. Or perhaps a number of people see us becoming a new Aspen or a new Vail, I guess I question what is wrong with just a great Park City. Certainly there is a need and room for a variety of improvements in town, but I wonder if we have picked the right causes to campaign for. Wouldn't it be novel to drive up Park Avenue and not have your car sink into 47 potholes while you try to drive slalom style to avoid them? Or what if when it snowed all the street got cleared so parking was possible on Main Street'.' And quesions that rise only after a tragedy, what about a full lime fire department and fulltime paid EMTs? I'd love to enjoy a beautiful park next summer and to have my children involved in atheletics at a recreational complex and I'd probably even take in a concert at the arena facility, but it will take a great deal of wizardry to accomplish all these things and still maintain one of Park City's most valuable shrinking treasures, our senior citizens. We will push them along with our struggling young families right out of the future of Park City. And it takes no crystal ball to see what kind of one dimensional community that would be. . All of the above, was. of course, my own personal opinion. The real point I want to make is that no matter which issues ou support or wish to see defeated no one will ever know if you don't make the effort to exercise your right to vote. This week, all week lonp, the League of Women Voters will be registering voters at i t Alpha Beta. Slop by and check your registration, make certain you arc eligable to vote next month and then do. There is no hocus pocus in deciding the future of your town. It is simply up to you, to vote and encourage other to so too. the final vote will strike a vein in our very future here. Off to see the wizard. ..no' quite. Newlyweds Randi anc Jcre Calmcs leave Friday foi Hawaii, after a gala send off party hosted by Caro Horton. Aloha. Create a little magic in your week. JAMIE |
