Show Historical Society Planning Glen wood Clean-Up Project The Park City Historical Society will sponsor a "major" clean up effort a! the city's historic Glcnvvood Cemetery Sunday and Monday, May 24 and 25, from 10:15 a.m. to 4 p.m. Assisting the society in the project will he community volunteers and members of the Hibernian Society and local Elks Lodge. Tika Beard, President of the Historical Society, has also extended a special invitation to all members of Park City churches to help with the work after regular Sunday services. For those not al tending services, Father Patrick Carley of St. Mary's Catholic Church w ill conduct a brief special service in the 85 year-old cemetery at 10:15 a.m.. May 24. Parkites. "It is the final resting place for many residents who have contributed significantly to the development of Park City and to its colorful past," she said. Much of the clean up effort will involve the reclamation of the old cemetery from the overgrowth of native plantlife which after years of neglect has consumed much of the historic site. Prior to the work, Jennifer Harrington, landscape architect and municipal planner, will attempt to inventory existing plantlife in the cemetery and with assistance from volunteers and members of the Utah Native Plants Society indicate which plants should be saved, trimmed or removed. Beard said everyone in Park City is invited'to lend a hand and encourages volunteers to bring shovels, rakes, chain saws, gardening gloves, clippers, etc. Liquid refreshments will be provided for all volunteers. For months Gary McDonough has researched the site-identifying site-identifying obscured gravestones and collecting biographical information about those resting in the old cemetery. Eventually the society would like to see a new fence around Glenwood and markers identifying its historic significance. |
