Show Muckers Return From 7s' Action Half of the Park City Muckers took a break last weekend while the other half traveled to Idaho Falls, Idaho to participate in a seven-aside rugby tournament. The Muckers came back with a one-win, four-loss record. Utah State University team won the tournament with a 5-0 record. Host Idaho Falls was second at 4-1 and the Sun Valley Club third at 3-2. John Sundquist, spokesman for the team, sdid "seven's is fairly new in this area and was a different way to play rugby." He praised the organization of the tournament and said he would like to take a "couple of sides" to the event next year. The Muckers traveled with only seven people, Sundquist. captain Rick Phaler, Bob Lewis, Jim. Black, Brain Jameson, Blackie Jones and Craig Harren. The lack of replacements took its toll on the team in the final game. Already having four games under their belt, each having 10 minute halves, the Muckers and the team from Sun Valley decided to play seven minute halves. "We had our share of nagging injuries. One guy had a bruised shoulder, another a pulled leg muscle and most of the guys had bruises and scrapes," Sundquist said. Sundquist said the game was played with the same rules as "15's" (a full rugby team) but the tactics were different. "The game is all speed, tackling and position, pretty much a one-on-one situation," Sundquist said. "You keep the ball and look for the breaks. Usually if you get by one guy you're gone." The Muckers were only out of two of the games they played. They lost 20-0 to the Idaho Falls "A", side and 40-12 to Utah State. They beat the Salt Lake Griffins 24-0 and lost to the Provo Muducks 12-10 and Sun Valley 10-6. The Muckers next game is scheduled for May 18 when , they travel to Logan for a full game against Utah State. |
