Show Advice for your Health During the Festival If you're planning to attend Park City's 13th annual Arts Festival there are some health and safety tips you might want to observe according to Dr. Robert Evers of the Park City Family Health Clinic operated bv Holv Cross Hospital: 1) Drink liquids every one or two hours. Dr. Evers said the sun is hotter in Park City than at lower elevations eleva-tions and the air is dryer. In addition, the sun radiates heat off Main Street's brick buildings. That, combined with large crowds of people, can send the temperature soaring causing dehydration. 2) Try to avoid being out on the street for more that two or three hours at a time. Dr. Evers said festival-goers should stop and "take a break". Sit in the shade or go indoors for a breather from the sun. 3) Wear tennis shoes instead of sandals. According to Dr. Evers, most people will be walking a lot so comfortable shoes are important but he said it is "also important to keep the foot fairly well covered. We do see a number of minor foot lacerations at this time of year." Between baby strollers, uneven sidewalks and people accidentally stepping on toes. Evers said the chances of having hurt feet when not wearing proper shoes are tairly high. 4) If you get dizzy, light-headed or nauseous, seek a shaded place where you can lay down. Dr. Evers said such symptoms can mean dehydration or possible heat exhaustion. Ideally, when experiencing these symptoms you should lie down in a shaded area with your feet up and drink liquids. If symptoms persist, you should seek medical help. 5) Medical help will be available at four locations. Park City's Emergency Medical Technicians will have a.food and information booth on Main Street but in addition, EMT's will be on duty at three separate locations according to EMT Director Suzanne Shellenberger. The locations are: the fire station on Park Avenue, the Timberhaus parking lot at the bottom of Main Street and next door to the Post Office Dr. Evers added that two Holy Cross ambulances will also be available at Main Street locations. 6) Know your limit when it comes to drinking alcohol. When it's warm, said Dr. Evers, an ice cold beer goes down easy and he said "it's easy to exceed your limit." Dr. Evers advises beer drinkers to "know your own limits and be reasonable and above all don't drink within two or three hours of driving." Drinking too much beer can not only be dangerous according to Dr. Evers but he said "it's a potentially stressful situation" for the human body. Generally, remember food is probably not as important as liquids. And Dr. Evers said there aren't too many other hazards for people to worry about. "Park City isn't plagued by things like a lot of bug bites," said Evers. "but if people do have problems they should go to the EMT booth or one of the other EMT locations as soon as possible." |
