When does a real estate saleswoman devote all of her spare time to matchmaking? When does a mother of five sons suddently become a Jewish mother to five daughters and one son? The answer to all these questions and more is to be discovered in the Kimball Art CenterPark City Players upcoming production of -M Fiddler Fid-dler on the Roof. This popular musical, scheduled to open May 2 and 3 as a dinner theatre at the Holiday Inn, draws most of its stars from , the Park . City area. Larry-Sheldon Larry-Sheldon plays the dairyman, Madeline Smith is the, match- maker, and Joan Williams is' the Jewish mother. Sheldon- is the newest memljer of the' Park City Plavers. His ' ro!e,: made famous by Zero Mostel, is one of the. most demanding in the play. Sheldon described his character; Tevye, as being very much like himself. Even , though Tevye can be boisterous, boister-ous, loud and blatant, Sheldon added, "Inside, he's really kind of a puppy dog. This will be the first time Park City audiences will see . ,t , . ,. . , ..... A , ., Sheldon on stage. Even though he has performed before audiences in the past at the University of California at Irvine, this role should present some new challenges. It is, by far. the largest role he has ever had. Furthermore it represents a return to the performing arts for the Prospector Pros-pector Square purchasing agent. "I haven't been in a real performance for six . to , eight years," he.noted. Sheldon first became acquainted ac-quainted with the Park City Plavers vduring the production of "Oliver!" A friend of his was involved with the play, -and Sheldon came to the performance. Joan Williams described ?her role as Gplda as "very much like me." As the real-life . mother of .five, she says she . has,; in a sense, constantly been on stage throughout her life. . ;"Golda is the traditional Jewish wife, very much ah individual, very much "a mother," she said: "Fiddler"; represents the largest role she has ever had in a play. She first joined the Park City Players during "Oliver!." in which she had seven lines. , , "The enthusiasm of everyone every-one is overwhelming, Williams Wil-liams said of her fellow Players. She enjoys doing a musical because "I think we all need a little levity." Like many of the other stars of the play. Madeline Smith said she strongly identifies witrf her character. This Park City resident for the past nine years said the experience of being associated with the Players is exciting and relaxing. She compared singing in the chorus to . "singing in the shower." While other actors use tape - recorders or television cassettes cas-settes to help learn lines, Smith memorizes Her part . while she runs in the morning. According to Smith, one of the most exciting things about doing a musical is that "the audience is expected to use their imagination." Tickets for "Fiddler on the Roof" go on sale Friday, the dinner theatre at the Holiday Inn will cost $14.25 for Kimball Art Center members and $15.75 for non-members.
