Women's Athenaeum The Women's Athenaeum held their regular meeting Monday, January 28 at 7:30pm at the home of Bob and Cindy Johnston at 614 Park Avenue. This home was the home of Druscilla Thomas, Thom-as, built by an uncle of hers and Nan McPolins, arid very well constructed about 1898. It has been most interesting to watch the outside work in these past two years, but much moreso, to see the inside which is very well done. Bob talked about antiques, how to recognize one and where to shop ft r them. Also if we already had a piece or two, how and where to get them identified and a new . finish when necessary. The bedrooms had some very -unusual and beautiful high frames and such beautiful wood, one you need to climb a ladder to get into and so huge with storage space built underneath. The bathrooms also were quite interesting with the flush tank above, way above, and a really unusual bathtub, both coming com-ing from the Kearns mansion. man-sion. The kitchen also had so much of the old pieces of wood and so beautifully done as did other rooms in the house. All in all, it was a real learning process for us as it seems each had a favorite antique to talk about and I do believe we all came away with a respect for the old and all were going home to bring theirs out and see what could be done. Cindy was a very gracious hostess with a delightful snack to highlight the evening. even-ing. They truly have a beautiful home to be proud of, as well as preserving the historical past and should be awnmendcd on a job well done. |
