Show off the rioorL Do you think American athletes should attend the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow? ;'H pgia . ; ,: villi I : flic psf!! Ipllllllll r Robin de Guevara Secretary to Superintendent Goodworth I think they should go along with Garter's suggestion. sugges-tion. I think the Soviet Union will feel as slighted as the United States because they will not be able to compete with the world champions. Lisa Hovey Administrative Secretary for the U.S. Ski Team My opinion is that I don't think the Olympics should involve politics in any way. But since this is a situation where world peace is a question, we should do anything to avoid a war. Lorri Gines Nordic Executive Secretary I think that United States athletes should not be involved in politics. This shouldn't be a political matter. These athletes have worked for years to even be a part of the Olympics and they shouldn't be denied that chance. L t.L. .illl.i: t ???T$ Jf '1 I o w Linda Moore Director of Development for the U.S. Ski Team My gut feeling is that they should be allowed to paftici- pate in the games. I don't think the Olympics should be used as a political ploy. I just heard the other day about a guy who had taken a year off from medical school to train as a marathon runner. However, if the other countries coun-tries are going to use it as a political weapon then I think we should also. It's difficult; as a national thing we should not attend, but on an invitational basis we should. And one of the major principles involved is that we don't fund our athletics; deciding to withdraw really is their right. Stein Eriksen Former Olympic Gold Medal Winner in Skiing My feeling is that since there are no more friendly political negociations or relations rela-tions between the United States and Russia, then there should be no more friendly competition in sports between bet-ween the same two countries. countri-es. The Olympic sign to me symbolizes friendly competition competi-tion under peaceful circumstances. circum-stances. We are now in the middle of a silent war. a firm stand should be taken. We should not compete in 1980 Summer Olympics in Russia. Ken Sitzberger Former Olympic Gold Medal Winner in Diving I think several countries will boycott the Olympics, and I think the United States will be one of those countries. I think that probably pro-bably they should. The entire Olympics have become a political tool. That can be witnessed in what took place in Mexico in 1968 and in Munich 1972. Anytime a country spends that much money to broadcast an event with the major networks picking it up, you're creating a stage that's just too tempting for people to use to further their own causes. It's important to recognize that the Russian, people are apparently not informed as to what is happening outside their country. With several major countries not attending attend-ing the games, some explanation explan-ation would have to be given to them. A lot of people will sympathize with the athletics, athle-tics, but there are enough other world class events that sacrificing the Olympics would seem reasonable in light of the Afganistan issue. |
