management specialist I told au an audience of ot Morgan County Farm Bureau Dureau members last week Speaker Berryman then devoted half hAlt an hour to the exploration of ot this broader problem Below Delow are some ome of ot the main points of Ms talk A Cooperative Endeavor The The pur purpose o e of my Job he explained is not to champion wildlife but to help the work with wildlife eo that we we can lin an solve olve our problems t together A cooperative agreement provIdes provides provides pro pro- vides that the Game Department contribute the amount of my sal ary The rhe I Extension Service pro pros provides vides secretarial services and the Department of ot Forest Range flange and Wildlife Management at the school provides office space and subject matter guidance My work la is with w th the school and my re responsibility r Is la directly to them them them- not to the Game Department The G Game a m e Department through Its Its financial contribution contribution tion tion Is II making an effort to work directly with the agricultural agricultural agricultural tural folks Must Mutt Develop New Basic Basle Management Concepts Concepti We Ve must develop some new ways and aud means of the sportsmen and the landowners and the land users getting alone Were going to try to provide more information through the county agents to all segments of the thEl population There Theres not enough enough enough en en- ough helpful printed information on different problems that come up up Were go going UK to develop a youth program I think the new Four H program will have a wildlife wildlife wild wild- life lite section In It it so so that the yom young g people veople can canstatt start working on wildlife projects Well We'll equip them with information and try to develop early in them an Understanding understanding understanding un un- of of ot wildlife an appreciation elation for it It and also an understanding understanding under under- standing of the problems that go with Its It The overall objective of this this new program Is II to t preserve public fishing and hunting but butt button on a basis that's fair and equitable to all concerned concerned- the land user as well as the i sportsmen I Sportsmen S o In Utah Hah annually spend approximately forty tour I million Fishing and hunting hunt hunts 1 ing provides ro recreation for over people nearl nearly a third i of ot our population Its obvious that we weve we've e pot got t to manage our ourI wildlife Its something that we I should treat as we do any other I E land resource t A Sportsman Now Is II Almost I Anybody Half of our farm population are now sportsmen Our farm farmand farmand farmand and city population h. h has merged ed ed I dont don't think we should try to maintain two separate Ie par ate camps We think of a sportsmens sportsmen's sports sports- sportsmen's sportsmens o mens men's group and a farmers farmer's group Actually were we're all In It I together and the quicker we weI I r recognize this thle and start to work together the sooner looner we can smooth over some lome of these thue problems Population Explosion and Future and Land Use Ule I The demand for outdoor re recreation recreation recreation re- re creation Including fishing and hunting over the nation as a whole Is la going to increase forty times In hI the next forty years And Anda a survey indicates that the demand demand de de- mand ll for outdoor recreation in Utah will exceed the national average If you think of the tremendous tremendous tremendous tre tre- number of people that go fishing and hunting in Utah and the way they swell the highways highways high high- highways ways now then now then the thought of this increase staggers the imagination im 1 In a few years some of the theland theland land that is sub marginal is going to be extremely valuable for various forms of outdoor outdoor- tion Just a place to take a picnic lunch in a few dew years will be worth something A place to go fishing and hunting will be wo worth h something Things look quiet around Morgan today but but Morgan Morga Is going to change We should watch the recreation and the tho fishing and hunting values We Well We'll lI have te tt develop Iome some concepts that match up to the the changing times we live In Triangle Committee Has HaI B Been Effective CI H Mol Morgan an County Co nty is rat rather r c Be here heie lie e In Utah be because beedee e you bt h ve e both both 4 deer fer er and j pheasant Mant hea ant hunting and aria yet t you u dont don't have bare haveA barea I A large pan Pitt of bt the county comity i in Sn m pheasant hunting bunting And your deer hunting bunting is different because so 80 much of It Is in private owner owner- Ship So the Triangle Committee isn't applicable perhaps as al such here 1 I me mean aU ae as Important as at it would be uy say ay In Cache Valley or Utah County But Dut 1 I think It Illustrates a ft principle I The Triangle Committee was wal Initiated in 1957 1951 by some rome farseeing far see far aee lug ing landowners and sportsmen and the oh and lame Game Depart Departs I meat On it are aie represented the theland theland land users the sportsmen and the Fish and Game Department t. t They meet at the county leveland leveland level leveland and at the district level and then finally at the state level to try and thrash out some Bome of these problems and see aee if li they can arrive at some Bome mutually acceptable acceptable acceptable accept accept- I able solutions There have been some lome fine things come out of that committee com This new trespass law was sponsored and shepherded shepherded- through the legislature primarily prim arlly because of the Triangle Committee The gun safety lafety law lawIs Is II another example And they are right now trying to determine deter dete determine mine the extent extent of actual hunter hunt er damage during the past pheasant season lealon Study Group Formed Another step has been taken here in Utah Utah and and to the best of my knowledge Its Us the first state in the nation to take this step The Triangle Triangles Committee has as set up a study group to work with them and assist them in develop- develop 1 lr 11 j new pew ways and means of pre pre- preserving preserving serving public hunting by Improving improving im Im- improving proving relationships and by working with with the sportsmens' sportsmens groups This committee will pull together to gether the best talent we can get from the field d of agricultural economics law We will havethe have nave havethe the l I landowners a and n d o 0 w II g e r s represented through one of their own agricultural agricultural agricultural agri agri- cultural experts ts The Game Department De DI- will be ibe asked to sit it in We will wm ask a member of the legislature the sportsmen Wha wI we want to do Is get as much much 1 talent together as we Canto can canto canto to sit sli down and look look at some some of these problems and see what kind or of a a solution we we n-we we can comes comesup come up Ii with with f rf r- r Conservation Is II Everybody's Everybody Problem What I can be done to Improve Im Im- prove tf the a det deteriorating situa I lion In Utah C County r ty- ty K for tor ez ex x- x ample This Is not a biological problem It Its I a problem In In human human hu man relations a sociological cal problem It cant can't be solved alone by the Game Department Its not going to be solved by bythe bythe bythe the Farm Bureau and It Its I Inot not not going to be solved by the sportsmens' sportsmens federations It will only be solved by looking at all effected people and trying to wor work something out We Weve ve got to learn how bow to Integrate fish flah and wildlife and fishing dishing and hunting with other ores uces of the he land or r were we're not go going going I gO-I ing to have pave it This study group will try to to come up p with something something some some- I thing positive in in the solution of specific problems Multiple Use A Must The demand on every acre of land and water is increasing at a I tremendous rate rate Not uston public lands tout but on private lands lauds Their Theil economic value Is changIng changing changing chang chang- ing we need more resources el the highways are taking lands o out t housing is ls taking land and so on on Weve We've got to learn how to use every acre to its fullest extent That's one of the objectives of this new wildlife wildlife wild wild- j life management extension program pro pro- I gram gram to to try and achieve e this I Ive been very encouraged by 1 the complete support this pro program program ro- ro gram has received Weve We've got all of the departments of Utah State University squarely behind us The extension service with all ll of its facilities is pushing The Ag Science division is right behind it the President is behind it the Utah Wildlife Federation i is II behind behind behind be be- hind it And the Fish and Game Came Department is squarely behind it its Weve got an opportunity to I work together together and and were we're going to try I hope that In another year we can say that weve we've made some tangible improvement STAN |
