Show MUZZLED S'c Enol R8 N OGDEN force Hcbcr Scowcroft Out of the Betterment League and Cause Him to Write a Letter Declaring the League Has Outlived Its UsefulnessMessage of Congratulation is Sent to Nephi L. Morrisi n Salt Lake-Resignation Lake-Resignation Sent Bluth Hetor Scowcroft has thrown n bombshell Into the camp of the Betterment Bet-terment league by demanding that hU resignation be accepted and stating stat-ing that tho league has outlived Its usefulness. In an open letter addressed ad-dressed to this paper, he nays: To the Fllltor of the Standard and to the Citizens of Ogden and Weber We-ber county: UnaWo to resist the pressure longer, long-er, and to answer the continuous inquiries in-quiries as to my Inacthlty and si- ' lencc In this campaign, after being Instrumental In organizing some thirty Betterment leagues in Weber county : I want to say to the citizens of Og-dent Og-dent and Weber county that my silence si-lence and Inactivity is not of nn own volition and will, but I am a victim of the Instructions Issued to close the houses in which 1 have W-en preaching civic betterment for nearly a year. When I left for New York, on October Octo-ber 15th, the hist words spoken to me forty-fivo minutes before train time by C, C. Richards, first vice-president of the Ogdeu Betterment league and ranking authority in the absence of David O. McKay, why left the same duv for California, was to get back with all haste that he won hi handle the league campaign, as outlined the Wednesday night before, then I could take It up where he left off. leaving him free to attend to his own political campaign. I returned on October 20th. and reported re-ported to Vice- President Richards for duty, and was Informed that my services, which were expected t he ji continuous speaking campaign, could not be used, as the places of meeting had been closed in my face and the faces of thoso with whom I was associated In Betterment league work. This refusal to allow tho use of meeting places f.,r league purposes, niter being used for that purpose for months, was Influenced. I am told, by local Republicans, and the- Republican Repub-lican i arty, some of w hose candidates are the local representatives of the gamblers and Ihpior dealers. I am willing to bo quoted as having a belief, which could only be strength-cned strength-cned by actual observance and knowledge knowl-edge of a llqi'or deal, that Utah Is In i he grip or tho liquor Interests, and the present rulers of jhe Republican party are responsible for that grip. My attitude and position Is set. forth in tho following letter, sent to lohn . Bluth. secretary of the Better mcnt league. (Signed I IE BE R SCOWCROFT. In connection with the above please publish my letter to Nephi L. Morris and John V. Bluth. (Signed HEBER SCOWCROFT. Letter to Bluth. Ogden, Utah, Nov. 3rd. 10 in. Mr. John V. Blutn. Civ My Hoar John: Find enclosed my cheek for fitly, as per promise n day or two before be-fore I left for New York to replenish the treasury of the leagu And I do It no' to help defrny expenses of the "Soft Pedal" campaign the cam-pal(.-n of "muffle. I voices" and "muzzl-j ed lips' that Is being pursued by the league. ' I Please resurrect the resignation, tendered by me. and read without any action, some weeks ngo, and request for me the acceptance of the same, for I am through with any attempt to bring ahout any reform with the present forces and power arrayed .malnst it, by .Influences thHt should stand for truth, but love a lie better than the tr44; that ought to be In the WkIii, bur love to move In the dark rather thon be In the light. I feel that tho lktleimont league has outlived Its usefulness, or probably, prob-ably, more properly stated, swullowcd up In disaster. My Dear Bluth: When party expediency ex-pediency Is rimde party policy, and that expediency demnnds iho sacrifice of moral and chic betterment, on the j altar of party success; when an or- conization created and brought Into being for the moral uplift and Improvement Im-provement of a community and for the spread of civic righteousness Is brushed aside, muzzled and its Influence Influ-ence crushed, I think that leasuo workers are waging n hopeless fight. For this reason I wish to withdraw and turn my attention and time to b.s.s discouraging work. I Signe d I Yours Truly, HEBER SCOWCROFT. Message to Morri6. ' Ogden, Nov. 4ih, 19P). "Nephi L. Morris. Salt Lake City, Utah One thousand people, in the Ogden Theatre tonight, received with prolonged applause, and then some, the reading of your letter to Hon. B. II Roberts vindicating him of tho filmy aspersions of an Ananias newspaper. news-paper. But principally applauding your heroic and marwy disaprovnl of the campaign of duplicity that is being be-ing waged by the bosses of the party to which you and I belong. Ogden to-night to-night re-echoes with approval and good words for you It is now up to Bishop Nibley and llynim M to do likewise. From one whose voice has been muffled and Hps muzzled in th's campaign. ' (Signed) HEBER SCOWCROFT. Chairman ex-com:nlitee Ogden Better- 1 ment League" |
