Show oo TO OPEN UP THE KAIBAB FOREST During the past summer the forest service department completed a survey sur-vey of the Kalbub national forest In southern Clah uud northern Arizona, for the purpose of estimating the available timber In that forest that could be disposed of for commercial purposes. The greatest object on the part of the fore.st official has been to encourage en-courage the building of a railroad into in-to that section Frank A. Dudley, representing the J. G, White interests of Now York, has been negotiating with the government govern-ment for this timber for a number of months, be having spent niot of his time during the summer In this elate and having personally gone over the 1 forest. Mr. Dudley Is a Niagara Falls man, and is thoroughly familiar with the manner of promoting large commercial com-mercial enterprises, and It now appears ap-pears that he Is about to negotiate one of (he largest railroad and reclamation reclama-tion projects of recent years In Utah Forester Graves has made a liberal offer of Umber In tho JCalbab forest to Mr. Dudley and associates, and the general ImpreFslon la that tho offer will be accepted nnd that the construction con-struction of a railroad Into the Arizona Ari-zona "strip" will soon be under way. A definite .statement a to Mr. Graves' offer to Mr. Dudley cannot yet bo learned, but it Is estimated that tho sale of not less than 450,Oun,riOo feet of timber has been offered. The timber Is well worth the building build-ing of the road, but besides handling this large quantity, of timber, a railroad rail-road would develop the semi-tropical Dixie land. Assistant Forester Franklin Reed met with Mr. Dudley al Salt Ike yesterday yes-terday afternoon nnd talked over the proposed aale of timber, 'but Mr. Reed is not prepared at this time to state Just what understanding was had with Mr. Dudley. He states, however, that definite Information will be received from Forester Graves within a rhort time, when It Is more than likely tho final details will be made public. |
