Show OO MACHINIST CHALLENGE CARMEN AlCHECKERS That spirit of friendly rivalry which has so long existed between the employes em-ployes of tho machine and car shops of the Southern Taclflc Railroad company com-pany was made manifest again yester day morning, when a formal challenge was Issued from tho machine department depart-ment to meet any team of checker players that the carmen may produce. A month ago It was not known that there existed a machinist in the Bhops that could have distinguished a checker check-er board from a washboard. Immediately Imme-diately after It became known that there was a team of checker players formed in the car department which was flaunting a red-flag ed challenge, In tho faces of the machinists, the squared boards became one of the common fixtures In the mcMno shops. Noonday lunches were gulped down without Flotcherlzlng by the, workmen and the long end of the. eating hour devoted to pushing wooden wood-en discs over the block-painted surface sur-face of trte board, In those preparatory mental skirmishes skir-mishes Charles Johnson and Jack Stockton proved themselves worthy of being Angled out as the champ ons of the mflchlnc shop in a challenge sent to the carmen.
