Show WHEN PINOHOT ARRIVES IN OODEN. Gifford Pinchot, former chief forester of the United States and the man who gave form to conservation in this country, passed through Ogden last evening on his way to California where he is to aid in the nomination of Johnson as the Republican candidate for ' governor. On July 24, Mr. Pinchot will return and remain here a day or J . two. He should be made to feel that he is in the home of his friends and that Ogden is as ardently devoted to his cause now as it was i when he, as head of the forest service, established in this city head quarters for District No. 4. Gifford Pinchot is one of the really great men of the nation. ! He is a millionaire who, seeing the emptiness of simply being rich, 1 dedicated himself to the herculean task of opposing graft and so ! safeguarding the natural, undeveloped resources of the country that I the predatory interests might find it difficult to rob the present and ' countless succeeding generations of all the blessings of a rich herit- 1 age. : Senator Sutherland of Utah has been unfriendly to Mr. Pinchot. j We must demonstrate to the distinguished gentleman from New York that Mr. Sutherland is not all Utah, in fact, that he misrepre- gents the people of this State. '! When the Ballinger-Pinchot case was being heard by the sena- torial committee of which Senator Sutherland is a member, our toga !i wearer became a special pleader for Mr. Balliriger and grew so par- tisan that, instead of displaying the nice dignity of a member of ' a court of justice, he undertook to censure a clerk of the interior de- j partment for disclosing information prejudicial to the Ballinger side il and, in doing so, proclaimed the bias and unfairness of which he had j been suspicioned at the time he was named on the committee, i As against a man of our own State so deficient in senatorial qualifications, it is not strange to find so many of the strong men of Utah supporting and defending Gifford Pinchot. i It is a source of regret that one of our senators should have been ; employed to attempt to stab in the back a man like Mr. Pinchot, i whose life's work has been an inspiration. i - |
