A riot tonight, remaikable for Its spontaneity and for Its fierceness while it lasted, resulted In the Injury of eighteen men, the complete wrecking af eleven street cars and the shattering of the windows win-dows in over 100 more. For two hours a mob of several thousand persons singed back and forth on the principal business streets, demolishing every street car that came within reach and completely ty-ln,T ty-ln,T up traffic. The disorderly scenes followed a mass meeting at Massey hall. Two weeks ago the Toronto Street Railway installed pay as you-enter cars on the principal lines. Much dissatisfaction developed. It was claimed that the cars were not adapted to that kind of eervlco. Held a Mass Meeting. Protests In wilting and by personal appeal became so numerous that Mayor Geary and the board of control decided to call a mass meeting, at which the matter could be discussed. Representathes of the street railway were also invited to attend. The meeting resolved itself into a setles of fiery denunciations' against the street car company and shortly before 11 o'clock broke up In disorder The audience became a mob. The first street car was attacked by the mob, which rapidly grew in numbers. police Were Powerless. Protests by Mayor Geary and other officials passed unheeded.
