Show ' ' nearly a century, wc fmd the good roads issue coming to the front again and the demand for federal aid being made anew. REBUILDING OLD " NATIONAL ROAD." Pennsylvania, Ohio and the other states through which the line of the historic Cumberland or National pike passes are working away to mend and reconstruct this famous thoroughfare, which in its day was the most important in the country, It was away back in 1806 that congress first made an appropriation appropria-tion for a federal road, to run from Cumberland, Md., on the Poto-1 Poto-1 mac, across the Alleghenies to the Ohio river. Later various other appropriations were made to extend the road on westward, until j 1838, when the project was given up. At that time the treasury had j spent nearly 7,000,000 on it, but there was so much opposition to the use of federal funds for internal improvements that the matter ! was dropped.
