It Is regarded regard-ed today as practically certain that Assistant Secretary of the Treasury Charles Norton of Chicago will succeed suc-ceed Fred W. Carpenter as secretary to the President. There had been some question as to whether Mr. Norton Nor-ton -would give up his work in tho treasury at this time to assume the secretaryship. . President Tart Is anxious to have as secretary a man who in a way, will be "an nsslfltant president" He has declared , to his friends that he wants a men who will relieve him of the minor details of the executive office, much as Mr. Teb shared tbe labors of Mr. Roosevelt. There has been some talk that Mr. Norton's appointment should be withheld with-held until after Mr. Carpenter's confirmation con-firmation as minister to Morocco. |
