What might have terminated In serious troubU between foreign laborers and Americans Ameri-cans employed In the construction of a ditch on Secoud Avenue was pru-vented pru-vented this morning only by tho timely time-ly arrival of the police, who arrested four men and forced the other excited foreigners Into submission. The difficulty arose over the question ques-tion of pay. The foreigners, who wero working for $1.K0 a day, demanded $2 a day. tho pay of the white men, and when their demands were not acceded to. they called for their time, and threatened to annihilate the foreman fore-man and the other laborers. Reports that trouble was brewlug among the laborers came to the police po-lice yesterday, and officers were detailed de-tailed to look Into tho matter. The men were watched the remainder of tbe day, but nothing happened. About fc:30 o'clock this morning, however, several persons living near Second avenue and M street telephoned tele-phoned to the police that trouble had started again. Mounted officers accompanied the putrol wagon and a squad of polloo-mon polloo-mon to where the laborers bad been working. They found many of tho foreigners branching revolvers and absolutely refused to work. When the officers put In an appearance they threw their weapons in every direction. direc-tion. Patrolman GrlfTlu arrested George Pappas. Augelus Pappas, Ralph Barents Bar-ents and Andrew Steles. The four carried revolvers. Gewrge and Angelus Pappaa were locked up on the charge of carrying conccaJod weapons. Baronls and Steles wen- booked on the charge of rettietlng officers. |
