Show BOGUS GOLD PIECES PASSED IN ZIQN Salt Lake, Mar.. 15. A clever counterfeiter with a supply of bogus $5 and $10 gold pieces and the knack of passing them was among the visitors visi-tors in Salt Lako last week. During his soujourn in the city he passed ai least $20 in bogus gold pieces, two $3 pieces and a ton spot. Before any trace of him wa3 secured by the sec- ret service ngents or tho United States marshal's office he was bound. It is thought, for some other locality. The money passed by the counterfeiter counter-feiter is of a fairly good quality, but can easily be detected by anyone experienced in handling coins. The materials is a mixture of lead with the features of the face well formed. The lead surtaco was coated with gold leaf, which rubbed off very easily, but could be kept Intact long enough to get tho coin passed. Secret service agents, Including Chief Goddard, were In the city working work-ing on the case, but were not able to locate the counterfeiter before he left the city. He kept on the trail of the man, gathering up tho bogus coins as the counterfeiter passed them. As far as was learned only $20 was passed in Salt Lake, |
