Show 'CAL8FORN1ANS ARE GREETED Large Delegation Headed by Governor Gillett of Golden State, Met at the Depot by Prominent People, Including Governor Spry, and Given a Send-Off on Their Mission to Washington. It was Just 2:S0 o'clock this afternoon after-noon when a splendidly, equipped Southern Pacific special train of flvo cars rolled Into the Union depot from the west, with Governor Gillett of California and half a hundred prominent promi-nent citizens of the Golden state on hoard, en route to Washington to ak eoneress for a fitting appropriation for the great world's fair exposition to be held In San FranclHco In 1915. following follow-ing the completion of the Panama canal. At a public meeting, held In tho J Merchant' exchange of the earthquake earth-quake metropolis last Thursday afternoon, after-noon, of a necessary exposition expo-sition fund of 55.000.0J0 was raised in a few hours, amid the utmost enthusiasm enthu-siasm of the business men of that city, leaving a balance of 5911.000 to be raised In the future by tho people of that city to round out the- princely sum of flvo million dollars to aid In the grandest celebration event ever mapped out In the world. It wan then determined to Invade the national capital at once and to ask congress for a suitable appropriation appropria-tion to make the eont a national success suc-cess In celebrating the great canal, and Governor Gillett and a committee were' appointed to risk Washington with that end in view. The special train with Governor Gillett Gil-lett and this committee on board left San Francisco yesterday morning as the second section of Uie eastbound Overland limited, and as It rolled Into Ogden this afternoon the distinguished distin-guished travelers were evidently surprised sur-prised at the cordial and enthusiastic reception given them by the people of Ogden. As early aR 2 o'clock hundreds hun-dreds of Ogden people had assembled at the depot. and members of the city council, the. mayor-and other officials, as well as President Heywnod. members of the Weber club, Hon. Fred J. Klesel and prominent business men constituted the reception committee to receive I the visitors and to extend the right hand of fellowship In the Initial work of pushing th.j celebration project. The Ogden City band, arrayed In tasty uniforms, was present to aid In the reception and discoursed appropriate appro-priate music as tho train was brought to a standstill. As Oovernor Gillett and the California Cali-fornia visitors emerged from the Pullman Pull-man cars, tho mayor and reception committee, with Governor Spry, Mayor May-or Cransford and other prominent citizens cit-izens of Salt Lake, extended thi guests an Informal, but enthusiastic, reception, and a few minutes later tho distinguished visitors were escorted escort-ed to half a hundred waiting automobiles automo-biles and taken for a drive through the principal streets of Ogden. Felicitations were extended the Callfornlans on eery side and the visitors were evidently Impressed with tho fact that the people of this city and state were enthusiastic in I their support of the great celebration mopped out by the enterprising people peo-ple of Snn Francisco. The special train was held at Ogden Og-den half an hour for the event and, after an enjoyable drive over the city the visitors were escorted back to the Union depot and the train pulled pull-ed out for the cast amid tho cheers of tho people Those uho accompanied Governor Spry from Salt Lake City to Ogden to meet Governor Gillett were Secretary Secre-tary of State C. S. Tlngey, Joseph Calne, secretary of tho Commercial club; Maor BranBford, A. F. Phillips Phil-lips of tho Salt Lake Tribune and others. To Mayor Glasmann, with whom he I rode, Governor Gillett expressed himself him-self as much Impressed with the city. When he asked as to the city's pop-I pop-I ulation, Ogden's executive said that they were in hopes It would be about thirty thousand. The California executive execu-tive smiled and said that he would I guess it at that number If not more. |
