Perhaps nowhere In the state has this literature been more effective thus far than in Sanpete county. The county commissioners and the road commissioners are all thoroughly converted con-verted to the earth road Idea. C. It. Allrcd of Chc9ier, the chair-mau chair-mau of the board, and one of the most enthusiaKtlc of good roads men. stated the condition in Sanpete county about j like this: "We have in this county , some 400 miles of public highways. To place upon all of these roads a 1 macadam coating of tbe best quality would cost about 15,00.1 r mile, mak-: mak-: Ing a total cost of $6,000,000. Half of the whole assessed valuation of the . county would not pay for this construction. con-struction. Maintenance Expensive. "Further," Mr. Allred continued. "I have been Informed that the macadam road in Ogden canyon costs Weber county, on an average, some $500 per mile per year for maintenance. If this Is true, and Sanpete county had Its roads already macadamized, at this aamo rate, It would inquire, to keep these roads in repair, an annual ex pendirure of S2ui).0ft0, an amount far beyond the annual paying capacity of Sanpete county for road purposes" Those who accept the general Invitation Invi-tation sent out by the county commW-, sloners of Sanpete county to attend the road convention to be held at' Ephraim Saturday.
