Hoffman and Hadberg were Jack-of-nll-trades about Aberdeen. Gohl, for several years prior to Lis arrest was agent for tho Sailors' union In Aberdeen. Aber-deen. To gain an understanding of the situation sit-uation which appears t have led up to the death of Hoffman, It Is necessary neces-sary to go back to 1307, when the repeated re-peated finding of corpses in the waters wat-ers around Aberdeen led to the appellation appel-lation of "floater fleet" to this aggregation aggre-gation of drowned persons. This floater fleet, composed of safl- ors in most cases, was generally pre-j pre-j sumed to have been men who had been i "slugged" or drugged or shot and rob-; rob-; bed in the numerous dives which Infested In-fested the water front of the city and afterward thrown In jthe Wlsh-kah Wlsh-kah river. Tho authorities tried to fasten the responsibility for these mysterious deaths, but they could obtain no tan-j tan-j rlble evidence. They did,' however, virtually wipe out the colonv of dives. The finding of mysterious dead men j ceased with the closing of the dives. About a year nfUTward, Mayor Benn 1 of Aberdeen was sojourning at Green River Hot sprlugs. near Seattle.
