Show COMMUNICATIONS on the eig salary. This paper lias received a great many communications on the payment of that $3,000 waterworks salary, but the people do not rin their names. Why hide behind an assumed or anonymous name? I .Why not help the good cause along by adding the weight of your name? Newspapers that are respectable and fair do not permit attacks in their columns over assumed names. There is nothing fair in striking a fellow in the dark. We have one humorous letter telling about Charlie drawing $3,000 per year for reading the daily papers at the waterworks office. Another letter treats on Charlie's arrival at the office; tells how he looks at the clock, then takes two hours for lunch, and reads a paper in the afternoon for thirty minutes and quits at 4 o'clock. This fellow thinks Charlie ought to have a raise. Another correspondent says it is a shame to send two men to turn off the" water and that the city should have a full company of 100 for that purpose. Another says that the meter reader should have more help; that Ogden ought to blu3h in shame to work men as hard as the present meter readers are worked. Another writer says he can prove that all the. councilmen of last year pledged themselves to "stay" with Kircher for $3,000 per year for three years. Still another man writes that, as the mayor receives all kicks for every thing bad in tho city government, he should be raised on an equality with the water chief ; and also, that the city recorder, auditor, police and fire chief all be paid $3,000 per year. That, he says, will wake up the taxpayers to their duty in the matter. ' Still another wants to know how much taxes the highest salaried officer in Ogden pays. If the good people who are writing these letters will sign their names in full, we will promise to publish every one of them. The mayor advises us that he has received a number of letters, congratulating him on hi3 policy of economy and that some of the people are very emphatic. The mayor can do his duty only as he sees it. If the city council will not support him, his efforts are unavailing. While he appreciates appreci-ates the congratulations he has received, he thinks the matter should be taken up with the city councilmen, where some good may be done. It all proves, however, that the people are watching the acts of the city government. |
