Alaska, is the most Interesting personage of that locality. lo-cality. He was a veteran of the Mexican Mexi-can war and is known to be the oldest mining man in the neighborhood of the city of Nome, also being acknowledged acknowl-edged the oldest Mason In the Alaskan Alas-kan territory. He Is a member of tho Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and has always been firm In his convictions of the truthfulness of the gospel as enunciated by the Prophet Pro-phet Joseph. On the 0th day of February of this j ear, Dr. Cannon celebrated his eighty-fifth eighty-fifth birthday at his home in the far north, and upon that occasion a large rumber of his friends gathered to honor hon-or him. At this ripe old age It Is said that Dr. Cannon Is halo and hearty and as 'actively engaged In business nlTairs as at any other period of his life. The Cannon residence on Front street, Nome, which, by the way. Is the headquarters of tho Mormon missionaries mis-sionaries laboring In the Alaskan city and vicinity, was tastefully decorated ir. red. white and blue, upon the wall banginc such mottoes as the following: follow-ing: "Truth is eternal," "The works of God continue;" "Improvement and progression have one eternal round;" "Be temperate In all things;" "The glory of God is Intelligence;" "No man enn be saved in ignorance." An elaborate dinner was served by Mrs. Grace E. Rlggs and a number of aids, and a program of recitations, readings, music and speech-making followed.
