Show IIS AMUSING Senators Smith and Lodge Clash Over Canadian Boundary Treaty. Washington, Feb. 9. An amusim? encounter between Senator Smith (Michigan) and Senator Lodge (Mas K&chu6etts) marked the debate on the Canadian boundary waterways treaty in the executive session of the senate today, Sonator Lodge asserted that the foreign for-eign affairs committee had received from the slate department information which he belloved answered Mr. Smith's objections. Mr. Smith, In his reply, declared the treaty had not been prepared by for-?.ier for-?.ier Secretaiy ;Root but that it waj the work of Chanlcr Anderson, a New York lawyer who has been eu-g&god eu-g&god by tho state department on various va-rious occasions in connection with treaties affecting the relations of this country and Canada. Mr. Smith intimated inti-mated that Mr. Anderson- was too close to the Interests that control power rights at Niagara Falls and eald that tho whole treaty was prepared pre-pared for the purposeof quieting the titles of New York corporations to those rights. Mr. Lodge then intimated that the Michigan senator wae not fully acquainted ac-quainted with the treaty. This aroused Mr. Smith, who told Mr. IxDdgo he did not like his . looks, hl3 scowl, or his irritating manner. Senator Tillman interrupted witu the remark that he hoped Massachusetts Massachu-setts and Michigan would clinch, but he supposed there were "too many centuries of culture in the Massachusetts Massachu-setts member to permit of anythlns bo commonplace." "If they would only get together." said Mr. Tillman, referring to his encounter en-counter in tho senate a few years ago with his then colleague, Mr. McLau rin. After a loug debate, members of the foreign relations committee suggested that they be permitted to consider the treaty. It was mot recommitted, but the discussion will be resumed Monday. |
