Much discussion dis-cussion has been aroused over a question ques-tion raised today as to whether Senator Sen-ator Knox of Pennsylvania, chosen as secretary of state in the Taft cabinet, is eligible under the constitution to accept office," Attention has been called to section sec-tion .VII, section 1 of the constitution which reads: "No senator or. representative shall, I during the time for which he was elected, be appointed to any civil . oi- j flee under the authority of the United States which shall bavo been created or the emoluments whereof shall have been Increased during i such time." During Mr. Knox'B present term as senator, the salaries of all cabinet. officers of-ficers wore Increased from $8,000 to $12,000 a year. His term does not expire until March 3, 1911, two years after the lime when his name will bo sent by Mr. Taft to the senate for confirmation. Mr. Knox declined to discuss the matter last night. |
