Show "PRINCE HAGEN" MAKES ' INITIAL BOW IN FRISCO San Francisco, Cal., Jan. 11. "Prince Hagen," a fantastic drama by Upton Sinclair, author of "The Jungle," was given its first public presentation in the Valencia theatre tonight, and was pronounced a success by the critics crit-ics who attended. In tho development of a love story about which the plot revolves, Mr. Sinclair first transports his hero to the caves of the under world, where he enlists In his quest "Pflnce Hagen" a noble from among 1 the Nleblungen, who, arriving upon earth, gains control of the world's gold Bupply and Incidentally becomes a rival riv-al for the hand of the heroine. Ensuing En-suing scenes are laid In the moro prosaic precincts of a bowery saloon, a Fifth avenue mansion and a Newport New-port homo. The prince Is finally defeated de-feated In his obpect by a sleeping ponder which carries him back to his kingdom, and the hero, who from a poor poet has become wealthy and powerful, marries the girl of his choice. Robert Warwick In the title role and Blanche Stoddard as the heroine were repeatedly applauded for successful portrayal of the author's leading characters. Mx. Sinclair has been in the city for several weeks, and has assisted In preparations for the production. |
