Show BROKE INTO A LUMBER OFFICE THIEVES GO THROUGH THE SAFE IN THE BUILDING. ;:' I Had No Difficulty In Reaching the Contents Con-tents of the Treasure Box as It Was Left Unlocked. The office of the Volker-Scowcroft Lumber Co., 237 Twenty-fourth street, was burglarized, Monday night, but little or nothing was secured by the would-be thieves. Entrance waa gained gain-ed by breaking a large window glass on the east side of the ofTlco building, and crawling through the ajierturo without unlocking or raising the win- dow. The glass must have been struck with considerable force as pieces of It were found lying seeral feet within the room. Considerable blood was In evidence as though the Intruder had seriously cut his hand In the operation, opera-tion, and aiterward smeared the blood about over tho furniture and -papers. The safe is not kept locked with the combination and a sign Is hung over It at night reading at follows: "This safe Is not locked and does not contain money or valuable papers." Owlnp to this fact, tho door was readily opened. Nothing has been missed from tho safe, nor from the various drawers about tho office which had also been openod and searched. It Is thought the burglar happened to observe the cashier last owning a,s he was counting the day's cash receipts, re-ceipts, and supposed that the latter would be deposited In tho safe, It being be-ing after banking hours. The company com-pany have their suspicions as to who the" person is, and, in fact, are now-making now-making a search for a certain individual indi-vidual whom they think Is guilty of tho crime. |
