Show BULLETINS ISSUED BY TRAFFIC BUREAU ' Shippers Continue to' Show How I Utah Is Being Discriminated ' Against. Further bulletins from the Commer-clal Commer-clal club traffic bureau, showing the difference in freight rate charges Tor j the transportation of goods to Utah i" common points and to San Francisco I were given out Thursday, as follows: j Cocoa beans, carried In carload lots : of 30,000 pounds from New York to, Utah, cost $687 per car. For hauling ' the same carload from New York to San Francisco, the . charge is $255, ' making a discrimination against the Utah manufacturer of $432 per car. From Chicago to Utah, the. freight ' rate charges on the same goods ai'e $591 per car. The ' charge on the same car front Chicago fo San Francisco Fran-cisco is $235, making -a discrimination discrimina-tion against Utah of ?:'.99 per car. In both of these cases, the car comlug to Utah merchants Is hauled 789 miles .lesb distance than tho car going to , San Francisco ; The ""car from New York to San Francisco 16 actually hauled from New York to Ogden 'for $177.99, and the car from Chicago for San Francisco, Fran-cisco, for the haul, Chicago to Ogden, $153.06; but when for Utah, tho New j York car is charged ?GS7, or ?5UJ.01 I more, and the Chicago car for San Francisco is hauled from Chicago to Ogden for $133.06; but when Trom Utah it is charged $594. or $440 94 more money, the service being the fame in each instance. Cocoa beans form the basis for the manufacture of cocoa and chocolate. The J. O. McDonald Candy company of this clly, now employing about 400 hauls, and whose products aro widely known throughout the country, ' is at present consuming about e-lgh-' teen carload3 of cocoa beans annually, and under equitable freight rates would easily and largely increase that quantity; but how can it do so under nuch an almost controlling handicap as above? Another most important factor in candy, cocoa and chocolate manufacturing manufac-turing is pasteboard boxes, and tho freight rates thereon run as follows: fol-lows: j The freight rates charges on paste- , board. and paper boxes, knocked down , flat, crated and boxed in carload lots of 30,000 pounds from Chicago to Utah, is $480 per car. The charge for the same carload from Chicago to San Francisco is $375. making a discrimination dis-crimination against Utah of $105 per car. j The car for San Francisco Is hauled I from Chicago to Ogden lor $226.14. against $480, or $253 S6 more money for the same. car and service when for Utah manufacturers. Xow, If the company named has I been able to build up its present large business in spite of these railroad discriminations, and of which the j above are only a part, what great pos-I pos-I sibilitlos might it not havo under just transportation treatment? |
