Show PINCHOT DESIRES TO MODIFY RULES Denver, Jan. 19. Chief Forester Glfford Pinchot. in a letter addressed to President Stone of the Colorado state forestry association and read at the annual meeting of that body, gives a guarantee of his desire to remove re-move objections to the rules of his de- partment so far as possible to do, and keep within the law. One of the chief causes of friction, he says, is the disposition of applications appli-cations for patents to mining claims within forest reserves. He hopes that through a conference soon to be held with representatives of the Amerisan Mining congress some understanding will be reached that will remove this friction. However, Mr. Pinchot lays stress upon up-on the claim that the forestry bureau, In most instances, is not to blame for the failure of patents to issue upon application. Its duty, "no says, is to investigate as to the facts of the location, lo-cation, surroundings, probable mineral bearing qualitv of the land, etc., but the final disposition of the application Is in the hands of the land office. For this reason, he thinks, a great deal of unfair criticism falls upon the forestry service. |
