The salary ot the president of the United States was today lixedat $100,000 per annum, an-num, so far as the eenatc could fix it, and salaries of the vice-president and the speaker or the house of representatives represen-tatives at $15,000 each The salary of the chief Justice of the supreme court of the United States was increased from $13,000 to $15,000 per annum, and those of associate asso-ciate justices from $12,000 to $14,000. These changes were made as amendment amend-ment to executive, legislative and judicial ju-dicial bill and after an extended de-bale. de-bale. Amendments allowing $5,000 to the vice-president and tho speaker of the house for horses and carriages, were stricken from the bill. Mr. Hale commented on tho increase in-crease of expenditures on battleships. which was so great that the mere interest in-terest on tho amount expended on one of them was more than all the Increases In-creases of salaries provided for in this bill. "We 6hall," he said, "never reduce tho expenses of the government uu-tll uu-tll we take in hand not only the question ques-tion of salaries, but the enormous expenditures ex-penditures that we are asked to make for the military." He called attention to the fact that we face a deficit in the rcvenuesof the government during the next year ot $130,000,000. An amendment to reduce tho salary allowance of the president from $100,-ooo $100,-ooo to $75,000 was defeated by a vote of ?,Z to 32. The amendment increasing the salary sal-ary of the president to 100,000 was adopted by a vote of 35 to CO. The Republican senators who voted against the Increase were Bevcridge, Floral), Uurkett. Clapp, Dolliver. LaFollettc and Tiles. No Democratic senators voted in favor of the Increase. An amendment was adopted providing for an "under secretary of state" to be paid $10,000 a year.
