Show Home of the Fez. Fez, where Mulal Hafid Is reported to havo been making hay of electric light fittings and everything else that has the taint of Europe, has given its name to the familiar Turkish equivalent equiva-lent of a hat. At one time all fezzes came from Fez, it being supponed that only thero could tho exact crimson crim-son dye required bo obtained. It Is curious that the name of an agricultural agricultu-ral Implement has thus been appropriated appropri-ated by headgear; for fez, or fas, means in Arabic a hoe. The favorite story is that Idreos II., the founder of the city, turned tho first sod with ono, remarking: "Hero I plant my fas." Another version is that an older city called Saf enco stood thero and Idreos simply trannpoBed its name. |
