Show I Lon Kump Shatters Record in East-West Distance Race EAST HIGH STAR EASILY WINS CLASSIC Warden's Record of 22 Minutes Min-utes Goes By the Boards; Time, 20:51:3. (Special to The Standard-Examiner) SALT LAKE, May 13. Lon Kump. star distance runner of tho East Side High school, proved an easy winner in the second annual East to West Side marathon race here yesterday winning in record time. More than sixty runners, representing represent-ing more than twelve schools of Utah and Idaho, faced the starter. Kump Jumped Into tho lead at the crack of the gun, and although pushed in the first two miles by Smith of Oneida, was an easy winner. Ho covered the distance of almost four miles in 20 minutes min-utes 51 and 3-5 seconds, taking 1 minute min-ute 8 and 2-5 seconds from the record rec-ord made in March, 1916, by Al Warden. War-den. Through an error on the part of the coaches the race was started more than 300 yards from the correct starting place, thus giving the runners a slight advantage. However, it is a new record and one that will stand. Kump won a silver loving cup for winning win-ning first place and a gold medal donated do-nated by Warden for a new record. Grundig of the East High was fifth.1 Holt of Spanish Fork was sixth. Thej remaining finishers wound up at var- ious intervals. I East High school with 114 points j won the team prize with L. D. S. second sec-ond wltli 35 and Oneida third with 32.1 Hogan, the distance star of the West High school, was seriously injured at Sixth East and South Temple when, ho was knocked to the pavement by an automobile which was following the runners. His skull was fractured, and ho was removed to the hospital. He was looked upon as a possible winner of the classic, due to his splendid Bhowing In the state interscholastic track and field game last week. Tho visiting athletes and officials were entertained at a banquet and dance following the classic. Griffen the Ogden High school star, did not enter the grind. oo |
