Show LfBERTYMOTORS WASHINGTON, April 3 Experiments Experi-ments are under way nt the naval air station at Rockaway Beach, L. I., to determine the number of Liberty motors mo-tors which will drive the naval seaplanes sea-planes on the proposed flight across the Atlnntic ocean next month. The three N. C. type of plnnes now in commission were designed for three engines, but officers in charge of preparations for the flight believe it will be possible to add a fourth motor, mo-tor, giving each plane 1G00 horse power. pow-er. Four motors will be carried on the N. C.-4 now being completed at Garden Gar-den City, L. I., and most officers favor the use of this number on the flighL It was indicated today that the number num-ber of machines to leave New Found -land would depend largely upon whether whe-ther any of those in commission were smashed during the preliminary tests or on the trip from Rockaway to the "jumping off" place. From this it was inferred (hat it was planned to start three and possibly pos-sibly all four of the N. C. type craft. Naval officials here are watching with keen interest the preparations being made by Harry G. Hawker and Lieutenant - Commander Mackenzie Grieve for their projected flight from New Foundland to Ireland in a Sop-with Sop-with airplane and llipy were not surprised sur-prised by the news that it had been found necessary to delay the start beyond be-yond April 16, the first day set. This machine may still bo tho first to undertake un-dertake the trans -Atlantic voyage as there Is no evidence that tho navy department de-partment intends to hasten the start of its flight. |
