Children in all of the public and private schools of the United States will compote on Friday, Feb. 30, in a school essay contest con-test conducted by the United States army. The subject will be: "What are the benefits of an enlistment enlist-ment In the United Slates army?" Announcement of "The Come-Back" National School Essay contest received receiv-ed a hearty response, not only among the school children of Washington but among officials of the govornmeni as well. As one school child puts It, "An essay es-say contest comes so seldom in Washington Wash-ington that it cannot fail to interest us school girla. I only. hope there will be more of them in the near future. I ; wish you every success in your irow , project." j Unqualified Indorsement of the es-Jsay es-Jsay contest was received from all j sides. "The Come-Back" in an early issue will publish, if space permits, a few of these commendations. Local Prizes Offered. In addition to the three master cups presented by "The Come-Back" to the schools represented by the students isuomitting the best essays, it- is ex-Ipected ex-Ipected that additional local prizes will I be offered. Reports received indicate 'that recruiting officers in the 5G districts dis-tricts will receive the support or public pub-lic spirited citTzcns in offering extra prizes to the best essay writers in their districts or in the prominent cities cit-ies covered by their districts. Large numbers of entries are expected expect-ed Mom many Catholic schools and academies. The National Catholic War Council, through Father Burke, has transmitted to superintendents of iall Catholic schools and to the heads ;of academies a copy of the ofricla! i "Come-Back" announcement of the , contest with request that every effort be made to attract the interest of the I students of these schools in the con test to the end that on February 20 1 I they may write an essay. 1 I Further Honors for Winners. , Further honors for winning students 1 I in this corftest may bo possible. Al j suggestion has been made that if a male student is among one of the three (national winners, that ho be recom- mended by the secretary of war for 'appointment to a cadetship at the West Point Military academy. i Further recommendation has been! made that the high girl student in! this contest be made an honorary com-1 mander of the First division. During the past week the master , cups have been on exhibition in the windows of the Jewelry firms from which they were purchased. Their exhibition ex-hibition attracted considerable atten-i tion not only from the school children, chil-dren, who made special trips down townto view the cups, but many pe-1 desrians as well. The unanimous1 opinion was that the cups were beautiful, beau-tiful, and manya student, w en t away I with a fond wish in his heart that he would be the lucky winner in order! that his school rafght receive one of i these trophies. j This week the cups were sent to Now York for exhibition among the1 '-Miool children of that city. 'They will later bo sent across the continent in order that school children of tho coun-i try may see for themselves the beautiful beau-tiful trophies offered by the wounded soidiers paper in this contest.
